SHOULD CONGRESS' PAY RATES BE SOMEHOW TIED TO THE ECONOMY?

Right now they get to vote their own raises, which seems to me to be somewhat of a conflict of interest (I wish I could vote for my own raises, I'd have retired by now).

Would it be better if their pay were somehow tied to the economy? I'm not sure how specifically, perhaps some percentage of the GDP, or relate it to the average earning power of american citizens. Maybe even calculate it to include deductions for any new debts incurred when they are in office.

Again, I'm not sure on the specifics (so if you have an idea please post it), but I do think it should in someway be tied to the way the country as a whole is doing, rather than our current system where they get to determine their own wages.

Tie it to increases in the minimum wage 81%
Yes, it ought to be tied to something relating ot the US economy 13%
No, the current system is flawed, but it also should not be tied ot the economy, instead . . . 5%
No, the current system is fine 0%

They can get a raise in the same percentage amount that they raise the minimum wage.

I understand that congresspeople need to maintain residences in both D.C. and their home district, and that neither is cheap, but I don't think that *they* understand what their *constituents* have to deal with, either.

Tie it down to inflation.

excellent idea. many corporate executives are now being held more accountable for company success and bonuses are now based on performance of the company as a whole, as opposed to being a set amount. they're also not getting the lucrative stock options they are used to. i like your idea. probably the best way to hold them to their campaign promises.

Their pay should be inversely proportional to the size of the federal budget.
