U.S. troops quit Baghdad positions on Iraqi's order

The New York Times

Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki demanded the removal of American checkpoints from the streets of Baghdad on Tuesday, in what appeared to be his latest and boldest gambit in an increasingly tense struggle for more independence from his American protectors.

Maliki's public declaration seemed at first to catch American commanders off guard. But by nightfall, American troops had abandoned all the positions in eastern and central Baghdad that they had set up last week with Iraqi forces as part of a search for a missing American soldier. The checkpoints had been blamed for snarling traffic and disrupting daily life and commerce throughout the eastern part of the city.

The language of the declaration, which implied that Malaki had the power to command American forces, seemed to overstep his authority and to be aimed at placating his Shiite constituency.

The checkpoints, reportedly had quelled some of the violence in the area, as well as facilitated the search for the kidnapped U.S. soldier.

Should the U.S. forces have obeyed the Iraqi Prime Minister's order to abandon the checkpoints that the U.S. military command had ordered be set up? (Oct 31, 2006)

COMMENTS:
At the risk of providing cover or support to unquestioning supporters of an illegitimate war, I have to say 'yes.'

If Iraq is to have even the illusion of being a sovereign country, and not a puppet government of the US, they have to have the authority to make such orders.

They could have disobeyed if they wanted to, but that would have stirred more anger against them. It is in the USA's self-interest to listen to suggestions from the Iraqi government. To have refused would have created a back-lash among the civillians.

The Iraqi PM's request was quite small, and there was no significant enough geopoltical reason to oppose it.

I think it was a bad move to abandon the check point because now insurgents will have an easier time moving weapons and men in and around the city and thus violence will increase.

It did more good than harm to support the Iraqi government.

If Iraq is to truly be a Sovereign nation, they should control what happens in their Country...It's unfortunate it has come down to this but now it's apparent not enough thought was put into this endeavor...
