DO YOU FORGIVE MICHAEL RICHARDS (KRAMER) FOR HIS RACIST COMMENTS?

[+] ballot by RobinGaylord
created Tue Nov 21, 06
Michael Richards committed what most people would call career suicide at a comedy club recently by calling a heckler the N word at least 3 times in a row. There are numerous videos of this on youtube and you can find his subsequent apology on google (CBS has pulled it off most video search engines because it took place on Letterman and is subsequently their property). Watch them both and tell us what you think.
Do you forgive Michael Richards (Kramer) for his racist comments?

I'm a man. Yes. 24
I'm a man. No. 16
I'm a woman. Yes. 10
I'm a woman. No. 9

A while back I create a ballot titled
FREEDOM OF SPEECH VS FREEDOM FROM RACIST INSULTS Ballot #100897
Who's rights have precedent over the other?

I think this event showed that it has nothing to do with what the owner has to say. It's what the public has to say.

by ClosetIguana on Tue Nov 21, 06 6:09pm [+]

I don't think Mr. richards will be hitting anymore meth before he goes on stage. I really don't care either, but the apology was even more surreal than his standup routine.

Voted : I'm a woman. No.
He wasn't even drunk !
Whatta jerk.

People will forget, though.
by Black_Lava on Tue Nov 21, 06 6:22pm [+]

Voted : I'm a man. Yes.
Unless it turns out he's actually been *wanting* to say things like that.
by himself809 on Tue Nov 21, 06 6:28pm [+]

Yes or no doesn't really apply, I'm entirely indifferent to the situation.

And I think his career pretty much died with the end of Seinfeld.
by herzog on Tue Nov 21, 06 6:34pm [+]

^Thanks for polluting my ballot. I won't delete that shit and no one else should. I want everyone to know what a bigot you are.
by RobinGaylord on Tue Nov 21, 06 6:50pm [+]

Voted : I'm a man. Yes.
Stupid things have fallen out of my mouth in the heat of the moment. Nothing that blatantly racist, granted, but he's human. He deserves forgiveness.
by Truthseeker013 on Tue Nov 21, 06 6:54pm [+]

Voted : I'm a man. No.
No. I'm tired of people doing this type of thing and then saying "but, I'm not a racist". BS.
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Tue Nov 21, 06 7:20pm [+]

Yes, it happens to us all. Sometimes when you get really pissed off at something you lose it. His apology seemed sincere.
by mindy on Tue Nov 21, 06 7:21pm [+]

I cant "forgive" him as such, because I dont know him and I never really watched Seinfield. I DO think that it would be unfair to simply stick a big sign on his head saying racist from now on, and not try to understand what he is saying. One things for sure though, it certainly wasnt funny!

Btw, I dont see what the need for you to force people to include their gender in their voting choice. I assume you have some theory to prove?
by Doctordraw on Tue Nov 21, 06 8:01pm [+]

Like Jimmy the Greek, he's finished. Not that he had much going on anyway, but he can forget about cameos, etc.
by Bostonian on Tue Nov 21, 06 9:45pm [+]

he seemed sincere yes but that "if it was 50 years ago," stuff isn't just an OOPS, he let out WAY too much of himself there to go back on it, all he did was show how he really feels.

His apology on Letterman was hilarious!
by Jyl on Wed Nov 22, 06 1:32am [+]

personally, he was only in 1 movie that I can remember, that I liked at all. I know he was on Seinfeld, but I never liked that show, so I didnt watch it.

Michael Richards was pretty funny in UHF starring as Stanley Spadowski.

I find it hard to hold anything any comedian who is talking on stage.
by ploink on Wed Nov 22, 06 3:51am [+]

He overreacted to a heckler, and knew exactly how to get to him.

He must have a lot of hatred bubbling just beneath the surface.
by mojo on Wed Nov 22, 06 9:48am [+]

Was he using the n word in a friendly manner? If so, why is that an insult? Black people use the word in a friendly way toward each other.
by xxxxxxxx on Wed Nov 22, 06 11:17am [+]

he was just telling the truth
by hurricane on Wed Nov 22, 06 11:21am [+]

I saw his apology on David Letterman and he seems to be going through a disturbed time in his life. But he said he knows now he needs to get some things in his mind worked out and deal with some issues. I feel sorry for him that it had to come to this.
by Kiki on Wed Nov 22, 06 11:25pm [+]

Guest- "I believe that other people (Whites) Warranty on using it expired after Civil Rights were granted."

- So you have to be of the correct skin colour to use a word, even in a friendly way? Isn't that a little bit racist (basing what people can and cannot say based on race)?
by xxxxxxxx on Thu Nov 23, 06 11:49pm [+]

And why is Eminem allowed to use the n word? He's white.
by xxxxxxxx on Thu Nov 23, 06 11:50pm [+]

Socrates, Think about how blacks (even thought they shouldn't) use the term. Now replay Richards's rant over in your mind. In retrospect: He messed himself up when he said that remark about 50 years ago. Then he added insult to injury when he said the word not one, not two, -third time's a charm-but, no, he didn't stop there-a whopping six-1,2,3,4,5,6-times! The sixth time, he added a taunting "ga" on the end. So he knew what he was doing.
If you agree with him fine, but sympathizing with him, I don't understand. I don't think he's funny and neither did those guys. He should have either ignored them (silence is golden) or come up with better material-period.
And for anyone who sympathizes with him, what was that about "what lies beneath"-watch the tape again?
About Emeiniem (how ever you spell his name) You and I both know that Emienem is a stage persona. I don't doubt that he's said it, but I wouldn't know because I don't listen to his music.
All in all, I don't understand why any white person (or black) would want to say the word; hasn't it made both sides look bad enough all ready?
by Guest User from [69.132.157.163] on Fri Nov 24, 06 1:39am [+]

You bring up a good point, Socrates. If black culture is so dispised by Richards and like-minded people, then why are there people like Emieniem (Whatever!) and Paul Wall?
by Guest User from [69.132.157.163] on Fri Nov 24, 06 2:07am [+]

After Civil Rights were granted, Whites could no longer, by law, dicriminated or make a difference of blacks. That means they had lost the battle. After 1963, blacks were at equal standing with whites, therefore making their taunt "nigger" void. By law we're both the same.
yet that doesn't change people's mentailty. If anyone agrees with him fine. I just don't understand how the fault is put on the hecklers. I think he could have left it with a loud "Shut Up!" or a loud clearing the throat, or "EEEEXXXCCCUUUSSE MMEE!" then, "Dang! It's a lotta you guys up there, I hope you're getting a group discount! Party of a thousand to table 12, 13, 14, 15...! You guys watch below, no that's not your neighbor farting, it's the balcony creaking-MOVE! It's rainning men...and women!"
He could have taken it from there. I've seen skilled comics where their whole act is pointing out people in the crowd. He needs help in more ways than one.
by Guest User from [69.132.157.163] on Fri Nov 24, 06 2:22am [+]

this is a loaded question, therefore I will not answer it

But he's a comedian- they make insensitive jokes about everything, in supposed good humour and not cruel intentions. As such, I'm not sure if there is anything to forgive in particular relative to some other stuff other comedians always say.

No! He was really vicious! When there is that much rage attached to the use of n-word, claims of not being a racist don't ring true.

Not only do I forgive him, I love him for all the joy and laughter he has brought this f'd up world we live in.
