COMMENTS:
I cans see how you could possibly find examples of over exageration

but complete denial - That is a bit confusing.

As time passes, history begins to blur and the facts of the holocaust are easy to distort.

It is up to us and future gnerations to tell of the horrors perpertrated by the Nazis and others, so as to warn future generations of the dangers of totalitarianism.

It starts off with seemingly benign purposes, and is usually helped by a downturn in the economy, loss of job and playing on people natural prejudices.

The Nazis rose in times where people were looking for answers to the world depression and Hitler seemed to have all the answers, but at a high price.

As a fervent anti-Nazi and anti fascist, I have spent many years contradicting far right, both verbally and at times with violence (in purely a self defense way)

The far right arent all knuckle dragging tattooed f*ckwits, but they are the foot soldiers of much smarter men who know how to manipulate them to their warped sense of patriotism.

We must keep the memories of history alive. lest we forget...

Mark my words:

The people who remember what happened are dying,
and it's getting further away in the past,
So more people will deny it now, they don't want to believe that rational people could change like that, that good children and church-goers could approve this kind of thing, when all it took was one loudmouth to change all their minds at once. And it can happen again, especially when people are in denial of it even being possible. ANY group of people can be a murderous mob, the more they deny it the faster they'd give in to it. It all comes from fear.

Remember.

Well said Jyl.

I also think you can understand the motives of Holocaust deniers by where they get their information: Neo-nazi websites and organizations.

In the picture, the guy on the far right looks like Barney Fife. Members of the Master Race, indeed.

The exact figures and extent of the holocaust could certainly (and in reality, probably have been) exagerated over the years. The victors write the history books after all, and its in their interests to demonise their enemy as much as possible, to justify the need for war (and the accomplishment of winning it).

To deny the holocaust in its entirety, considering the weight of evidence supporting it, seems like a manifestation of a personal anti-semitism than an honest appraisal of the facts.
by Doctordraw on Mon Nov 27, 06 8:03am [+]

^ That doesnt mean I approve of holocaust deniers being denied their basic human rights to freedom of speech and expression though, i.e. the arrest of David Irving was a disgrace.

steelhamster - was going to give you spome karma - Turns out I've got none to give

So I'll settle with saying - 'I agree - Too true!'

Some facts of history get denied for emotional reasons, in spite of evidence to the contrary. Some people get emotional about history.

"So more people will deny it now, they don't want to believe that rational people could change like that, that good children and church-goers could approve this kind of thing, when all it took was one loudmouth to change all their minds"

Absolutely.

The further away we get the more leverage these disgusting individuals will get with the uneducated and easily swayed - using the very same techniques that they will say were impossible to have brainwashed the German people in the 1930s and 40s.

It's interesting to see how that some people, vociferous defenders of the revisionists, are conspicuous by their absence.

Hmmm.

I'm not a denier, so I'm safe in not voting. But I do offer this comment, as I have before in the face of this issue.

My paternal grandfather was part of the forces that relieved several concentration camps. He helped bury the dead. He had one memory of carrying two survivors over each shoulder to a food tent, because they were each so thin.

Damn, clcicked too soon. To finish, I believed him, despite having known him for all of thirty hours when he told me the tale.
by Truthseeker013 on Mon Nov 27, 06 4:01pm [+]

There is no legitimate evidence to contradict the fact that the holocaust happened. You may question whether 6 million jews or 6 million and one jews died, but to deny the whole thing ever happened requires a complete denial of historical fact, overwhelming personal evidence and more than a little anti-semitism.
by herzog on Mon Nov 27, 06 4:56pm [+]

^Agreed, but should they be locked up for it?
by Doctordraw on Mon Nov 27, 06 5:54pm [+]

No, they shouldn't be arrested merely for denying the holocaust.

Shunned, despised, isolated, denounced, but not arrested.
by herzog on Mon Nov 27, 06 6:14pm [+]

"should they be locked up for it?"

I have wrestled with this point (intellectually speaking) many times.

Setting a precedent for censorship is never a good idea because of course if the tables are ever turned YOU could be the one being censored, right?

However, we should have the power to reject articles, publications or advertisements from our media because, as the Harvard Crimson pointed out when Bradley Smith tried to buy some ad space, most of the revisionist material is 'utter bullshit' and that it's sole purpose is to 'propagate hatred against Jews'.

As much as I like to see Ernst Zundel behind bars I can't help but think his imprisonment actually helps his cause....
