It just seems like quite a few of the most out-spoken, tireless opponents of homosexuals are closet homosexuals themselves. Such as Ted Haggard for example.

So what percentage of homophobics do you think are closet homosexuals themselves?

Not very many. This is a myth that most homophobes are closet homosexuals. Of course, it won't matter how much factual information I post to back this up as people will vote their bias.
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Tue Nov 28, 06 3:12pm [+]

This is something that many homosexual people LIKE to believe, because its easier than accepting that someone genuinly finds you repellent/immoral in some way. Its also a way for liberals to attack their opponents character and dismiss their arguments as the result of an unhealthy mind, rather than anything substantial.
by Doctordraw on Tue Nov 28, 06 3:56pm [+]

No one has voted below 21% yet, and the category with the highest number of votes is 41%-50%?

You people are fucking idiots.
by Doctordraw on Tue Nov 28, 06 3:58pm [+]

No clue.

It does seem like a lot of the more strident homophobes out there are caught having a homosexual affair. Not all of them of course, but a great many.

But in the general population of homophobes? I have no idea.

It would be an interesting study, but impossible to perform as they obviously wouldn't respond honestly.
by herzog on Tue Nov 28, 06 3:59pm [+]

I observed a LOT of homophobia against my best friend, all through grade school, middle school, high school.. way before we even thought of sex, or gay/straight whatnot, a few boys made it their mission to spend their time harassing the same 2 or 3 kids (it was a very small town) and these idiots were not gay, no, but they were the kids with the worst issues, the ones with the most to prove, with the worst ideas about themselves and how to act with other people. Nothing would surprise me now about a few of them, I'd hate to know what wastes their lives have become after making such a mark on a few kids they hated in school.
Some people are meant to break out of nasty little towns.. some people just rot :) It doesn't take much brain to imagine what finally happened to them in prison.
by Jyl on Tue Nov 28, 06 4:02pm [+]

With so few votes, not sure how you make that conclusion we people are idiots, but I don't believe it to be true either, I'm not making excuses for haters

i'll take flack for this, but quite a few. one in particular comes to mind -- he never misses a chance to comment on a ballot about gay people, despite supposedly hating us.

i would disagree with ffolsd and doctordraw as well. i think that its a number you could never really prove, but face it -- it's mostly men and most of those men leave lesbians alone and target other gay men. why?

i'm going to vote 21 - 30% becuase i think it's probably at least a quarter.
by Kev24 on Tue Nov 28, 06 4:41pm [+]

jyl also makes a good point -- there is no way to quantify this. no study could ever be done effectively because somone who has an unnatural hatred of gays (mostly men hating gay men), they similarly have an unhealthy, almost obsession with gay men -- they would never admit it to themselves.

some pyschologists believe that men who have an unnatural obession with gay men, while also claiming to hate them, generally have major issues -- they tend to have low-self esteem and tend to have issues about their masculinity. therefore, they usually make pre-emptive derogotory comments or acts agains gay men because they have a deep seated fear that someone thinks they are gay. by lashing out, they believe they are covering themselves and other men will not doubt their sexuality.

ffolsd -- any study done on this topic has mostly been focused on the psychological state of that person and not so much on their sexual orientation. are they closet cases? i think at least 25% are. feel free to disagree, but my experience has been that some of those same guys, when they get a few drinks in them are more than happy to have another guy go down on them. and unless you're gay, you probably wouldn't know that, so argue against it all you want.

No scientific study can be done, but when you consider motive...

What Kev said and more, some of them are probably closet closet homosexuals, who haven't yet even come out of the closet of their own denial, never mind the closet of their own hypocrisy.

"i think that its a number you could never really prove, but face it -- it's mostly men and most of those men leave lesbians alone and target other gay men. why?"

Because no heterosexual man would want to stop lesbians doing their sexy thang that we love to watch!
by Doctordraw on Tue Nov 28, 06 5:21pm [+]

^ lol. funny, the thought of that turns gay men off. it's also funny that so many str8 guys are into doing their chicks up the butt. kind of ironic, isn't it?
by Kev24 on Tue Nov 28, 06 5:28pm [+]

Whoa, thats not fair. Butt fucking is not necessarily a gay thing, to be fair im sure men have been travelling their wives chocolate highway since the beginning of homosapiens.

The back door appeals to both gay men and MANY heterosexual men, IMO because it is a forbidden place (and its tight!)
by Doctordraw on Tue Nov 28, 06 5:40pm [+]

Besides, gay men havent got a choice of orifices like heterosexual men have, so I guess its natural that anal sex should be primarily associated with gay men.
by Doctordraw on Tue Nov 28, 06 5:42pm [+]

^ that was the only part of that comment addressed to ffolsd. the rest wasn't. just had to clear that up.

as for you doctordraw, you're probably right. but men's butts are so much better than women's. but of course, being gay, i'd say that. IC_tune

I disagree with homophobia and think it's unwarranted save by the complete gut prejudice of the homophobe, but I also am skeptical of the claims that most rampant homophobes are closeted or severely repressed gays themselves. Were that true, most neo-Nazis would be from Jewish backgrounds.
by Felix on Tue Nov 28, 06 8:57pm [+]

i don't even think homoerotophobia is a real thing, unless it refers to the fear of BEING homosexual. otherwise, it's actually more related to metathesiophobia (fear of change, the opposite of homophobia), or neophobia (fear of new things. or fear of me, i suppose.)

Many homophobes are religious - quite a few religions condemn homosexuality.

Homosexuality has only recently been celebrated in western culture... so there is a long legacy of non acceptance which still floats around.

Some homophobes are bound to be repressed homosexuals... but I dont think it'll be any higher than the national average.
by Mr_Susan on Wed Nov 29, 06 3:20am [+]

please use correct terminology. as a person who has a reaction similar to claustrophobia when in an unchanging situation for long periods of time, i think i i'm a homophobe, and it'd really prefer not to be associated with bigots.
