WOULD YOU SAY THAT THESE COMMENTS MADE TOWARD ME WERE RACIST?

[+] serious ballot by xxxxxxxx

I can remember one single time a caucasian was somewhat what I believed 'racist' against me, but in an intended good (although annoying) way. He told me something along the lines of "I can't imagine what it must be like to be an ethnic minority in the West, etc, etc". He was a far-left socialist, and in the way that he was trying to reach out to me by saying that he understands that it must be difficult for me because of my race... I just found it patronising and a little bit annoying, because in my life I have not experienced the things he was assuming that I had- not at all. In reality, I am well integrated into Western civilization. He also went on to assume that I had been heavily oppressed and experienced racism from whites all the time (which isn't true at all- I have NEVER experienced racism from whites toward me because I am a non-white living in the West... NEVER. The only racism I have ever experienced really was from other ethnic minorities actually). I understand that he had good intentions, but I just found it annoying and condescending that he was trying to stick the victim label on me based on my race, when that's not true of my life at all. I have never struggled to fit in socially because of my race, nor have I ever felt oppressed or alienated because of it, nor do I feel less capable to succeed, nor do I think it has been more difficult for me because of my race, and I have never experienced racism against me from whites ever.

Was that racist to make such assumptions about my life based on my race?

Yes 42%
No 42%
I don't know 14%

I found his comments to be condescending. Socialists usually try to assume the victim label on me because of my race, which isn't true of my life at all.

"Socialists usually try to assume..." It seems as though you're putting a label on socialists, though I'm sure that's not your "intention." It sounds like that person got under your skin--try to blow it off.

Just dumb. It's safer not to mention the issue, since it's too personal. It's like talking about someone's height, or weight.
by skylab on Mon Dec 04, 06 8:12am [+]

elvislennon- I'm just calling it as I have experienced it. I'm not saying all socialists do that- all I am saying is specifically the some that I have encountered have had the tendencey to make such assumptions about me.

By the way, I am an ex-socialist. I once was one.

Doesnt sound racist, just a bit patronising, like you said. Hardly a thing that will give you nightmares.
by seamus on Mon Dec 04, 06 8:34am [+]

yes. common mistake many well-meaning liberals make. many don't listen. they arrogantly assume what your life is like because you're gay, black, hispanic, a woman, asian, etc. they're also the first to insult you by talking down to you. i've said it before and i'm saying it again -- i've experienced more biggotry from liberals than i have from conservatives --- even on this site! so yeah, it was racist of this person.
by Kev24 on Mon Dec 04, 06 8:36am [+]

^a stupid assumption, sure. But racist??
by seamus on Mon Dec 04, 06 8:41am [+]

racist does not mean that a person is nasty, violent or agressive toward another person. many people wrongly assume that being a racist means being a "hater" of some kind or that it means blatant discrimination or harassment of another because of race. it doesn't necessarily mean that at all.
by Kev24 on Mon Dec 04, 06 9:06am [+]

^ totally agree with you, but i just dont see how the bloke in that particular situation was behaving like a racist. Seems like he was actually trying to be nice and inadvertedly committed racial/social faux pas...
by seamus on Mon Dec 04, 06 9:16am [+]

Perhaps I should do what a rightwing true racist would do and accuse YOU of racism against HIM.

At least that is the popular counterattack made by bigoted conservatives.

As for the empathic comment made by this person that you chose to be offended by, let's compare it to what, as a young man, future U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall, experienced while passing through a small Southern town on a train. While waiting at the station for his connection, a local white man sidled up to Marshall and whispered into his ear: "Boy, the sun has never set on a live nigger in this town."

To me, there is a significant difference. If the "racism" you experienced was the worst you ever come across, you'll have done quite well for yourself.
by cranky on Mon Dec 04, 06 9:44am [+]

i was going to use the word faux pas seamus. i think you're right.

Not racist, it was well-meaning but dumb. Typical far left.

Patronizing is the opposite extreme of hatred. It's more subtle, but racist just the same.
by passiveson on Mon Dec 04, 06 2:58pm [+]

Not really so much as very condescending and patronizing. Maybe racist in the sense that he made immediate assumptions although they weren't framed in terms of violence or hate.
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Mon Dec 04, 06 3:12pm [+]

Its interesting that he was far left. It appears he was framing his view of you as a "victim" - a common thing from those of the left and especially the far left.
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Mon Dec 04, 06 3:14pm [+]

Racism: the belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.

So he was making assumptions about a person based entirely on your race, so that is a bit racist.

It's odd that so many on the far left believe race is an individuals most important characteristic, but then accuse everyone else of focusing too much on race.

"Everyone else"??

No, just dicks like you, zog.

Socrates, it sounds to me like you met a silver-spoon caucasian with an entirely theoretical take on life, who was out in the big wide world for the first time.
I doubt he was being actively racist, just naive and gauche.

It actually can be seen as “stupidly” racist because this man was trying to dehumanize you and fit you into an unchangeable emblem of an “unlucky” race (not his, of course). It’s like the way Americans used to create a false image of people in other countries and then relate to them only as that) usually cartoonist imag)e and then lamenting their (imagined) sad state. This is making a myth of a group of people so you don't have to deal with them as people like yourself, but only as distant legends. The lamentation solidifies what he wants to see in you and then it absolves him of guilt for your being that way.
by forgetmenot on Mon Dec 04, 06 7:12pm [+]

cranky- "If the "racism" you experienced was the worst you ever come across, you'll have done quite well for yourself."

- No, that is definitely not the worst. Most of the racism against me in my life was from other ethnic minorities. Very nasty stuff. I don't know if it is really that I have done well for myself, but rather that Western civilization seems to be doing quite well for itself. My friends vary in race and religion- Latin American, caucasian, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Arab, Buddhist, Christian, atheist, Muslim, Taoist, Hindu, etc- it is the diversity and pluralism of the West combined with the mainstream core Western culture of tolerance, freedom and equality.
by xxxxxxxx on Tue Dec 05, 06 12:54am [+]

It is prejudiced to assume that every individual from a minority background has experienced hardship in the West. I'm not sure I would call it racism.

Holy crap! You're a darkie? Next time you encounter any far-left Socialists, ask them for reparations. They'll be more than happy to dish out a donation. wink
by _Beelzebubba on Tue Dec 05, 06 9:48am [+]

^No way, left wing socialists would never approve of such a ridiculous notion.

They will gladly campaign to get other people to pay for reparations, but their money will stay put.

It may have offended you, and probably rightfully so, but it sounds like they didn't mean any harm. I never think someone's words are racist unless it's clear they have hatred in their heart. Otherwise it's just being thoughtless (as in this case) or being un-PC

I doubt very seriously that you can apply your racial situation with people of color Socrates, you went on and on and on...in this ballot as if you wore the racial make up of a person of color...I will say that your situation differs greatly from a person of color, greatly...I could be wrong, however, I do not believe that I am, this ballot was not a good attempt at comparing your situation to those with a gentic tan...012

You've probably never felt like you needed to feel oppressed because you're probably the majority where you're at. If not i wouldn't worry, if you're in America then chances are there are many ppl of different cultures all over so you're not the minority anyway. If they say it rudely, tell 'em to fuck off...if you have to tell them kindly to fuck off then do so. If not, tell them to plainly fuck off and as an added bonus to suck your fucking dick.058
