I don't think I hate anyone, but I know plenty of people who say they do, it's a strong word, but hmmmm, I don't know, I hear of People who say the only way they got through this or that situation was to get revenge on someone they hate.

larry - I asked the same Q about boredom and loneliness. If we have these emotions, do they have a necessary purpose? If not, why have them? In olden days, maybe it helped you defeat an enemy... a driving force to overcome them. actually - that seems to be how it's used today.

Yes, it must be a survival mechanism. Just because it causes misery doesn't mean it serves no purpose, although it often is destructive.
