Once again, I'm not sure where 'Northern Italy' begins and 'Southern Italy' ends. But I have also heard southern Italians complain that they thought that Northern Italians were snobs and stuck up.
Voted : No, this is not true at all
Southern Italy begins in Naples. The north is much more developed than the south and it's where the vast majority of the italian industry is located. This is why northern italians look their nose down on southerners. Things do happen more slowly in the south but it's not laziness; it's due to the weather i think.
seamus- Well the Italian girl I mentioned said that the further North-west in Italy, the more hard working the people- so I think she was implying that the further and further south, the people are supposedly lazier- so Rome would be lazier than Florence, Florence lazier than Turin, as examples. I personally am not sure what to think of her statements.
If I lived in Southern Italy, with all that amazing scenery, fine wine, great fresh food and gorgeous weather I would not want to sit in an office working for some profit oriented knob.
Mr_Sheepy - so is that a 'yes' or a 'no'? Do you think that Northern Italians have a stronger work ethic than Southern Italians?
I vaguely remember some study being done on this that said what the ballot states. Its a bit colder in the north so there are less chances to enjoy the sun so they probably work more.

I'm half Italian myself and I have heard this sterotype all my life,it's complete bullshit. Some Northern Italians think they are better then Southerns because they live in large Urban areas where most of the Italy's commerce and "culture" occurs. They see themselves as the descendants of the Renaissance and preservers of Italy's high culture. They see us as country rubes who are too lazy to develop any industry and thus we stick to farming.Well anybody who has every been on a farm knows that farmers are some of the hardest working people on the planet.

Never been. It's entirely possible that there is a distinctly different culture in the north than in the south. Of course most europeans are pretty lazy to begin with.
Why would anybody take a stance either way without having looked sufficiently into it?There are appreciable genetic differences between populations even within nations. There are also environmental differences.

Not at all. I know of a few folks from Messina who could outwork all of us. And most of them are over the age of seventy.
"Mr_Sheepy - so is that a 'yes' or a 'no'? Do you think that Northern Italians have a stronger work ethic than Southern Italians?" by Socrates on Thu Jan 18, 07 10:47am I have no idea. And I don't care. And I can't understand why it even matters to anyone. But this is Best And Worst.
Mr_Sheepy - I believe your opinion matters, whatever it may be.
Quite possibly... I've trekked Italy several times and find the North much more pleasant than the South... for food, scenery and the people. I noticed more con-artist and gypsies in the South... lots of uni-brows, hairy backs and body odor, too... work ethic?
