ATRRACTIVE PEOPLE ARE TREATED BETTER

A while ago I read about a study , can’t remember who did the research or how creditable it was or if it was even scientific, but it said parents unconsciously treat their attractive children better than those not so attractive.

I personally believe from my own observations that people who provide service, treat attractive people better than those not so attractive, maybe it’s nature at work , part of our primitive brains, or maybe I’m wrong and it’s just me who believes better looking you are better treatment you receive.

I found the following in a blog, it’s kind of sad, don’t’ you think?

“Ugly people- and I speak of myself as one- are treated universally with disdain and contempt. I can't even get good service at restaurants, I can even see the clenched smiles of the staff that I know are repulsed by my very presence. While I'm not a criminal, I do hate people because I know they hate me for not being attractive.”

Do treat people differently because of their looks?

I don't give preference to attractive people 46%
I do give preference to attractive people 30%
i do give preference to attractive men 10%
Don't know 6%
Comment 6%

COMMENTS:
Voted : I don't give preference to attractive people
Not consciously at least, but the blogger is right, ugly people are treated with disdain sometimes. There's also another thing to it: if an employer wants to hire staff for his company it will almost invariably choose the good looking candidates even if the ugly ones have the same or better qualifications.

Voted : I do give preference to attractive people
Yes, attractive people do get better treatment, and I know I am inclined to be more generous in my behavior toward attractive women. Oh, those hormones.

No it's definitely not just you larry. This is a very thoroughly researched phenomenon. Here's a quote from a book on Social Psychology:
"(...) Over the past thirty-five years, many researchers have examined this stereotype, and two separate meta-analyses of these studies reveal that physically attractive people are perceived to be more sociable, successful, happy, dominant, sexually warm, mentally healthy, intelligent, and socially skilled than those who are unattractive."
Attractive people actually do tend to be more socially skilled, because people are drawn to them -- thus fostering more diverse socialization.
Additionally, physical attractiveness has a moderate impact on job-related outcomes such as hiring, salary, and promotions.

From a sociological perspective, attractiveness is idealized (with some variation between cultures obviously.) From a biological perspective, attractiveness (such as symmetrical facial features) signifies fitness to procreate.

- Being aware of this actually drives me to pay more attention to "plain-looking" folks since they tend to have to try harder to be accepted -- (not to imply this is black-or-white; most people are "average-looking".) But I just can't seem to fight the biology, which makes me feel a bit shallow at times.

I have seen super-attractive people treated better than others with less than stellar appearance.
Maybe if more of us told of it to the manager of the restaurant, shop, etc, things would change. Maybe not.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where "America's Next Top Model" gets more viewership than C-SPAN.
