N KOREA HELPING IRAN WITH NUCLEAR TESTING

[+] serious ballot by herzog
created Wed Jan 24, 07
North Korea is helping Iran to prepare an underground nuclear test similar to the one Pyongyang carried out last year.

Under the terms of a new understanding between the two countries, the North Koreans have agreed to share all the data and information they received from their successful test last October with Teheran's nuclear scientists.

North Korea provoked an international outcry when it successfully fired a bomb at a secret underground location and Western intelligence officials are convinced that Iran is working on its own weapons programme.

A senior European defence official told The Daily Telegraph that North Korea had invited a team of Iranian nuclear scientists to study the results of last October's underground test to assist Teheran's preparations to conduct its own — possibly by the end of this year.

There were unconfirmed reports at the time of the Korean firing that an Iranian team was present. Iranian military advisers regularly visit North Korea to participate in missile tests.

Now the long-standing military co-operation between the countries has been extended to nuclear issues.

As a result, senior western military officials are deeply concerned that the North Koreans' technical superiority will allow the Iranians to accelerate development of their own nuclear weapon.

"The Iranians are working closely with the North Koreans to study the results of last year's North Korean nuclear bomb test," said the European defence official.

"We have identified increased activity at all of Iran's nuclear facilities since the turn of the year," he said.

"All the indications are that the Iranians are working hard to prepare for their own underground nuclear test."

As I recall President Bush mentioned something along these lines, some sort of axis of . . . something.

And I also recall that he was roundly criticized for suggesting that these nations were in any way associated in the pursuit of weapons of mass destruction.

Now that they're quite obviously cooperating in pursuit of weapons of mass destruction, will you concede he had a point?

No, even though his statement was correct he's still wrong, somehow 11
Yes, it seems they are working together 7

what you want to consider is that without the axis of evil speech, would North Korea be handing out nuclear secrets to other countries, just to be nice?

cause and effect kids.

LCD: so it's your hypothesis that North Korea decided on this course that will likely lead to a direct conflict with the worlds only superpower, because they were called names?

Meanwhile Pakistani gives nuclear secrets to Iran, North Korea and Libya and they get billions in military contracts. What gives?

I agree those nations could pose some sort of military threat. I didn't criticize him for saying that; I criticized the impact of his specific phraseology, inside and particularly outside of the United States. Like "You're either with us or you're with the terrorists," it served to alienate us from much of the rest of the world including most of our allies.

This speech happened about a year prior to the invasion of Iraq. The U.S. lost popular support for the invasion partly due to the consequences of the speech/es. Support from (major) allies would not only would have helped militarily but would've diversified our political and strategic assets.
It's difficult to say how the situation would've played out with more global support, but I'm pretty sure it would have been better.

After the terrorist attacks of September 11th, most Americans felt scared or threatened, and angry. Our desire for revenge spilled from Afghanistan (rational) to Iraq (mostly irrational). The problem is our reaction was distorted by, among other things, outdated thinking by our leaders. We're not dealing with win-or-lose situations in conventional nation-states when considering terrorism, though we're rightly terrified by nuclear weaponry.

Oh, of course they are working together- and North Korea has always been the more technologically advanced of the two (thanks in large part to China).

LCD- so what you are saying is that when Bush suggested there was an axis, the North Koreans and Iranians heard it and thought to themselves: 'Oh, that sounds like a good idea, I only wish we had of thought of it.' Or do you believe it would be more likely that the two were already contemplating cooperation before Bush made the speech?
by xxxxxxxx on Thu Jan 25, 07 1:18am [+]

^Well, it undermined the efforts of the Iranian moderates who sought better relations with the west.
Does any of you know when this cooperation began ( was it after or before the 2002 speech)?
by seamus on Thu Jan 25, 07 7:40am [+]

There are reports it went back as far as 1985. The Korea Institute for Defense Analysis report claims that Pyongyang sold 540 missiles from 1985 to 2000 to clients in Egypt, Iran, Iraq and Libya. It may have started earier.

Unconfirmed reports and quotes from a European defense official, huh?

Looks like my Halliburton stock will be going up.

Of course, whenever I'm looking for cutting-edge technological know-how, I'd enlist these bozos.

The US has made or exacerbated much of its foreign policy problems, over the past six years.

This is what happens when government is handed over to crooks, incompetents, and ideologues.

Still, call me when the following has occurred-

1) Either power has a viable targeting/delivery system

2) Well, that's it.

"Call me when either power has a viable targeting/delivery system."

Isn't it too late by then?
by ClosetIguana on Thu Jan 25, 07 4:36pm [+]

Truth: once they have nuclear weapons and a delivery system, what can we do to stop them?

To use a popular held belief that's like saying I'll worry about global warming after the planet over heats and dies.
