this is a tough one. i can see both sides of the issue. hate to be lame, but not really sure how i feel about this. in theory there is a separation of church and state, but then again, churches are expected to obey national laws. this one could get ugly.

Although I personally think there is little wrong with gay adoption, I find the idea of Labour forcing Catholic agencies into accepting gay couples morally wrong. The government should respect the beliefs of all religions and accept the fact that there are still millions of Christians in England today.
Not lame, Kev. I'm conflicted on this, as well.

If you consider the Catholic Church as a business, then they can have any rules that they want.
^not sure what happened there?! Anyway, I did this ballot in the last week, ballot 111464
Voted : Catholic church is wrong, government also wrong
I'm going to take a stand that some will find odd. While I strongly disagree with the Catholic church on this issue I do not think that the government should be forcing a church to do something over this issue. Perhaps if the church was advocating violence or something, but in this case it isn't.

Well it's a coherent stance given their beliefs. I think it would be wise not to open a conflict with the church on this one. There are so many children waiting to be adopted; it's not like gay couples have to choose a child from one of the church agencies specifically. If the Catholic church closes the agencies because the Gov. forces them to accept gays couples as adoptive candidates this will be a pyrrhic victory for gays methinks.
^ fiddle, i feel the same way for the most part. i'm conflicted for obvious reasons, but i tend to agree that the government may be over stepping on this one in particular. it'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Same here. I don't agree with the Church's stance on gay adoption. But I don't think the government should should step in and dictate to them how they should conduct their church business. Provided of course they aren't stepping over the bounds of law.

Hi, FF! (Damn! Busted!)

It's a church agency, not a government agency. They should be able to do anything they want without government interference. There are plenty of other options for gay couples.
I think the subject of gay couples adopting children is totally absurd. What next? A mother/father & son/daughter given the right to get married & have kids? The world is going to pot.
I agree the church shouldn't be forced to do something they don't' believe in , but if they are receiving government money to help run their adoption service, that might be a problem.

Don't get me started about Holey Mother Church...

I think it's wrong, but Catholics see this as a matter of conscience, so maybe some concession to religious beliefs should be made.
^I knew cathexis couldn't stay away.
Hi cath, hope you are doing well, but how did you know fiddle?
Freedom means freedom to live acccordign to the dictstes of ones ocncience. FOrcing the Catholic CHurch to break its ownmoral standards isn't the road to freedom, its the road to tyranny, where special interest groups dictate what morals everyone else is expected to have. Freedom doesn't ensure that we are never offended. Freedom ensures only that we have the right, provided we harm no one else, to live as we have chosen to live. The Catholic CHurch teachs Homosexuality as a sin, and it violates their teaching to hand Chilren over to activley Homosexual couoples. Its not right to force them agaisnt thier iwll to violate this. Nor is it tolerance.Gay couples cna adopt form elsewhere, and don't need Cahtolci agencies. This is just about force and contorle, not freedom. I support the CHurches right to freedom.
