Snow's statement is an exaggeration but it does contain a great amount of truth.The Iranian people,specifically the youth are extremely pro-democracy and have been calling for reforms in their nation.Moreover the Iranian youth enjoy's Western fashion,cinema,music and overall culture.As for his remarks about Academia being essentially anti-American well anybody who has attended university or has exposure to professors can see that the overwhelming majority of academics are extreme leftist who blame America for everything that goes wrong with the world.

^My experience at university is that the overwhelming majority of liberal arts professors are indeed liberal.Specifically professors of social sciences (anthropology,PoliSci,Psychology etc)are hardcore leftist dedicated to redefining the status quo and bashing America.The only Conservative professors I came accross taugh economics,philosophy,math or science.
Moreover with professors like Ward Churchill or Noam Chomsky I doubt that my experience is unique.
I would agree with corrupt's 2nd comment except that I found learning a different view as being useful. However, many students are unable to look at it that way. Whatever the professor says they take in as being correct.
While academia is tilted much to the left (various studies show this), to automatically assume this means they are "anti-American" is demagoguery at its worst. Dissent IS patriotic. One shouldn't demonize those with different views as it seems Mr. Snow is doing.

Well not totally so. It is an exaggeration. Most are in the sociology, political science, and that sort of stuff are overwhelmingly leftist. They criticise everything about the United States and Western civilization as a whole as immoral, degenerate, corrupt, indulgent and such. They are against not only American political policies, but also culture, populism, Christian traditionalists and such.
I would say that average Iranians are probably more fond of American pop culture than the university elitist far leftist faculty though.
