ARE SOCIOLOGY CLASSES JUST FULL OF BIAS LEFT WING PROPAGANDA?

[+] serious ballot by xxxxxxxx
created Mon Jan 29, 07
Have you ever done a sociology class? I have, and it was very... very... biased and closed-minded. Any 'discussion' wasn't really actually discussion. Anytime anyone in the class questioned what the course was promoting as 'fact', they were often not listened to, and just dismissed as plain wrong. The entire thing seemed to favour some groups of people over other groups of people concerning social theory- they were especially critical of white heterosexual Christian males- apparently according to them, they're the worst. And all of the students just took it all in as fact- Marxism, extreme feminist views, extreme views that minorities are drastically oppressed and absolutely subordinate, and so on (having these views is fine actually, but obstructing discussion that questions their status as absolute fact is not).

So are sociology classes just full of bias left wing propaganda?

Yes, indeed 40%
No, not at all 30%
Not necessarily 20%
I never really thought about it... 10%

Just a bunch of propaganda. I won't forget how anyone that questioned was just screamed down, and how when feminism was discussed- class just went around the room asking the males: "Are you sexist???! Do you approve of the way society is sructured to entirely oppress woment??!", when they didn't even say anything to provoke such a thing.

It probably contributed somewhat to my converting away from socialism. I was a far-left socialist at the time.

Sorry to say this, but you got some f*cked up classmates.

To answer your question, i do think the classes tend to the left but your description sounds too caricatural.

I took a few of these classes and as you said, they assume many things. America is the most oppressed country in the world, it's especially worse for women/minorities depending on which category your teacher falls in to. Every white is racist, every black is a victim.

Hmm . . . I wonder if the majority of B&W users are moonlighting as sociology professors?
by herzog on Mon Jan 29, 07 8:38am [+]

*tend to leant to the left*
by seamus on Mon Jan 29, 07 8:45am [+]

seamus- I don't think 'left-leaning' is the right description. More like entirely indulging in far-left socialism.

And it is not a caricature, that is exactly what my experience was.

"Sorry to say this, but you got some f*cked up classmates."

- Not really, it was mostly the teacher doing that, witht eh support of the socialist students.

I had always assumed far-left socialism to have been the most open-minded, enlightened, tolerant, and so forth. But I saw left wing arrogance and closed-mindedness as being indeed existent- and to a large extent, and in a very influential and supposedly respectful position. But I should be greatful I guess, the class helped me to see that socialism and socialists are not what I had thought of them. The teachers probably don't even remember me, but they helped change my poltical, social and economic views once, away from socialism. And I was once a very far far far- leftist.
by xxxxxxxx on Mon Jan 29, 07 9:16am [+]

^Well people change. I used to be very conservative and now i'm leaning to the left. This shift did not occur because of some idiot teacher(s) though (and i had plenty of those)...
I re-read your description and it does look like a pantomine so i can understand your shock and repulsion by someone who acts that strange in a classroom. As for arrogant and close-minded people, well that's beyond individual political beliefs

I took Sociology A levels and was of the opinion that it was a left-wing recruiting agency. Our teacher was a fully fledged communist who tried, and succeeded in impressing alot of my classmates with 'facts'. He also happened to be the Humanities department leader and my History teacher as well. In a class discussion about the beginnings of the cold war he asked the class "which system was better in their opinion, capitalism or communism?" Anyone who voted capitalism was given a mocking sarcastic comment i.e. "do you enjoy being a burden on the rest of society" etc. The fact that i found shocking was that hardly anyone in my History or Sociology classes could tell we were being given left-wing bias lessons.

I was also the only male in my sociology classes, out of a class of 25. (Not complaining.)

Herzog you are wrong, according to my sociology teacher Britain is the most oppressed country in the world, as well as the most evil. Though he was of the opinion that America was a thorn in the side of civilisation...

I have nothing against 'left-wing' principles or ideas, and I agree with some of them. I just resent not being given the 'full' picture by my teacher.

I have found that the people who try to force diversity and tolerance down people's throats are the least tolerant of all people.

May a "diverse" family of cannibals move into their gated community and let's see how these university hypocrites change their tune.

I haven't taken any sociology classes yet, but was planning on taking one next year, I don't know what the deal is one way or other.
by larrynelmira on Mon Jan 29, 07 10:12am [+]

seamus- It wasn't just them that got me turn away from socialism. But they helped with my initial motivation to question a lot of it.

I'm not a right-winger though. I question the left a lot, but that does not mean I like the right.
by xxxxxxxx on Mon Jan 29, 07 10:30am [+]

Most people prefer to study ideology. It's natural to take a class that simply confirms what one already believes. If the ideas discussed make one uncomfortable, the usual response is that the professor (or the class) is bias to the left or right.
I took several courses in demographics (taught in the sociology department) and they were pretty much stats (math) and population trends. Deviant behavior and criminology didn't seem to have a bias towards the left. On the other hand, Marriage and the Family seemed to be way left. I suppose the feeling of bias, depends on the interaction between the student and the professor. I'm sure that if one was a member of the KKK, most college classes would seem to be teaching that Every white is racist, every black is a victim. I wonder if every Neocon is a member of the KKK?

To be honest, I never really thought about it. I took intro which was really good, and Families in Transition (about gay, lesbians, etc.), and Immigration and Ethnicity (which spoke about the problems that minorities and refugees face), HOWEVER, women's studies is REALLY biased.

Also, Social Psychology classes kick ass. Maybe try one of those, since they concern human behavior in groups and not politics..?

What a shame that attacking white males for no apparent reason and holding non-whites and women up on a pedestal are deemed 'equality' and 'responsibility'

Some teachers are better people than others obviously.
No professor at my school would have attacked "white males for no apparent reason" or held "non-whites and women up on a pedestal", that sounds so bitter and sad.

Well if jyl, a very leftwing liberal female, didn't notice any prejudice against her for being a conservative male then clearly there was none.

What insults jyl? Do you take umbrage to being called female?

The fact is that as a woman, and as a liberal, you probably wouldn't notice the same things as a conservative/male. Just as a white guy will probably have a different impression after attending a black panther meeting than a black guy. You aren't the target of their propaganda.

So again, where's the insult jyl? I have accurately described the situation, and why you were unable to discern the obvious bias rampant among certain groups. Nothing more.

Guest_User- "What a shame that matters of equality, and government's responsibility to people are considered "Far Left," these days."

- I would hardly call a class that picks on certain groups of people as something that promotes equality or government responsibility. Like when in my class they went around picking all the guys and accusing them of stuff, without even knowing them. But don't worry, they didn't pick on me much as the others, because I am not white- how patronising.
by xxxxxxxx on Tue Jan 30, 07 3:08am [+]

^ Because when we studied race relations, all the white people were made to feel guilty over things they had never personally done in their lives. And then religion- same attitude.

I remember the issue of sexism in India was brought up, and my teacher's response was that we have to respect other cultures as 'different'.
by xxxxxxxx on Tue Jan 30, 07 3:10am [+]

Applerod- "Did you talk to the teacher about how you felt, Socrates?"

- No. I was getting bad enough marks as it was, so I was in no mood to stir the pot. Just get over with and out of the way. Although, I wouldn't mind doing another sociology class now that I am more than ready to stir things up as much as possible. And what better person to stir things in such a class than myself- an ex-socialist, non-white that follows a religion that is not Christianity- to question their doctrinal facts.
by xxxxxxxx on Tue Jan 30, 07 3:16am [+]

Voted : No, not at all
Most are, but some sociology departments are staffed with sane professors. The department at my undergrad was full of Marxists who still regurgitated ideas that had been disproven decades ago. I'm told that the department here is relatively free of Marxists in comparison to other departments.

For all her propaganda, my undergrad sociology teacher at least gave fair tests that did not grade the student based on loaded questions.
