Does the British monarchy play an important role in today's society or have they simply become a tourist attraction, irrelevant to the age that we now live in?

They are just a tourist attraction 11

Yeah the monarchy's value is almost entirely cosmetic. They do have the same power all other celebrities do to bring attention to under-reported news stories (Starvation in the developing world, AIDS, etc.) except they don't earn their fame and the citizens of England should not pay taxes to them. They perform no service and are owed nothing.

A tourist attraction is an important role. Even if no one wants kings to get away with murder anymore, the pageantry of it is still popular.

It gives the Bristish people a recinfrocement of their Britishness and provides a sense of continuity.

I have to agree with Robin, Im not a fan of the monarchy. Yes they bring in a lot of tourism to the country but they also cost a small fortune to keep and other countries seem to do well for tourist trade without the need for monarchy.

"It gives the Bristish people a recinfrocement of their Britishness and provides a sense of continuity." Most British people can be reinforced of their Britishness by going down to their local, and the sense of continiuty is provided by our dismal football, rugby and cricket teams results.

William and Harry..the two cowards who wear row upon row of medals they havent earnt and who never actually wanted to go to war in the first place despite what the press says..yeah your ok you can have them two...and as for the others i vote for a beheading or drowning. Worthless bunch of leeches. Drain on tax payers money. And as for tourism i asked a bunch of italian girls taking photographs outside buckingham palace and they said they didnt come to see the royalty, just the royal buildings and histroical royal area's of interest, plus the Grenadier guards etc. The Monarchy is outdated in principal and they dont actually really do anything.
