COMMENTS:
No comments yet? And you used the word "racist" even. Probably just thoughtless.
What the fuck? I dont know the guys background, but there is no reason to assume the guy meant anything other than what he said he meant. Only the most sensitive, paranoid, and to be honest insecure people would pay such attention to a seemingly innocuous remark. This politically correct PARANOIA is getting out of hand

What's racial about "clean"?

I think it was condescending, which isn't pretty either. Typical running at the mouth by Biden. He was running for pres 20 years ago and lost his party's nomination to Michael Dukakis, so maybe he should just quit now while he's ahead.

It seemed to show probable racial stereotyping, at best; latent racism at worst. It may have been merely a poor articulation, but ... especially since this isn't the first incident, I'd say there is some degree of racism.

I don't see anything remotely racist at all. He said he is articulate and bright. He also said he is African-American. He did not say that his race was the cause of his characteristics, so I fail to see how this is supposedly at all racial. And I also did not see any direct comparison to other black candidates at all. Nothing racially insensitive here as far as I can see. Not at all.

Whew. It's a good thing he didn't say anything about his lips.

Doc, thc, and socrates pretty much summed it up with their comments. Biden should not have apologized because there obviously wasn't anything racist about what he said.
How one views others says a lot about what they really think of people "unlike" themselves, so while I sure he meant it in a "good" way ,it was still a putdown, albeit subconciously and points out personal convictions he must harbor in his "heart of hearts" ...people who has comparable sentiments will almost always come to the defense of people with a similar set of values...many people live in various states of denial of their core values and don't/can't acknowledge it...
"clean"? how can anyone read racist into that? the only problem i see is that he seems to have misspoke, forgetting to specify "the first mainstream african-american CANDIDATE", but it's obvious that that's what he meant. people can't possibly think he's saying there's never been a black person in history who was smart and had good personal hygiene.
this is one point, draw, where you'd be right on the mark, if what you said was actually what you meant.
"articulate and bright and clean." Have more offensive words ever been uttered? Ha! Seriously though, how do you people read this sentence, that no one else finds any hint of racism in, and deem it to be offensive? Seems to me those were a string of compliments. Are black leaders trying to do away with the "negative stereotype" that blacks are intelligent, articulate, and well groomed?
no, you are.

These idiot pollies should take the scripts their writers hand them, instead of adlibbing.
