COMMENTS:
I don't get it. It sounds silly to me. No offense, but I have to be honest, that is what my impression of it, at this stage in time is.
One of those toothless resolutions that comes out of Washington. It is whatever you want it to be. It's supposed to make people feel more respected. I guess it really comes down to the individual's interpretation. In some cases, I would venture a guess that it actually is more of an insult than a complement. Could go either way.
It's a month when we're to focus exclusively on black accomplishments throughout history and whites should feel guilty for this month for all the horrible things they've done.
Why is it that those in favour of it cannot be bothered to explain to me what it is about and why it is useful?
It's another annoying month my kids have days off of school for, when they should be IN THERE LEARNING! *rants*
It's a way of forcing white people to learn about the rather small and insignficant things Black Americans have done in our history, in order to passify their need to be considerd worthy in the minds eye.
(lol cranky got it exactly)

It's a month for racists, like herzog, to express their racism openly, rather than keeping it in the closet, like the other months of the year. And to promote the idiotic idea that American white males are the most oppressed minority in the history of the world.
Since no one has offered a positive perspective on what the month is for, then perhaps you should get rid of it?
cranky- Disapproving of it is racist? Elaborate.
Voted : I will explain it all to you below
Lighten up, people.
Socrates, it's a way of celebrating the accomplishments of the Black community. Herzog is just whinning.

Its an excuse for all the self hating white middle classes and certain white hating minorities to overemphasise past contributions of blacks to society, and flush out any of thsoe hateful people who just want equality between the races.
depending on how short-sighted a person is the time when a lot of US citizens had to fight for their rights is either so long ago it can be forgotten or it was a relatively short time ago. Since there are still people alive who remember and took part in a lot of what happened a few decades ago I think they deserve some time for everyone to take a look at what it took back then. Of course general short-sightedness seems to be the biggest problem with everything in the world lately, and probably from now on, so why should I bother saying something obvious that's just gonna get some kids' panties in a knot? :p cheers y'all :)

(pointing at Jyl) Damn, that's one smart woman...
Jyl "general short-sightedness seems to be the biggest problem" Correct, however I believe it is short sighted to rub everyones faces in a month of celebration concerning the trials and tribulations of one individual racial component of America. Long sighted people would realise that such "holidays" serve to reinforce the idea that some races have been more hard done by than others, and that people should celebrate the achievements of members of their race, rather than their individual achievements. Long sighted individuals would see this black history month for the knee jerk reaction to the civil rights disputes that it is, and promote a long term policy of EQUALITY between races, not dwelling on past grievances.
Ummmmmm, Beelz put up fried chicken. Ummmmmmm. And not that KFC shit; it's Popeye's!
Must... stop... racism... now! Can't... hold... out.... gasp****
And how dare anyone criticize Black History Month. Can't you see that this young lady's life has been improved immeasureably by Black History Month?

I must admit I don't know what it's like to be a minority member. Maybe they feel outnumbered? Also, history plays a part. Mostly bad history.
Read some Taylor Branch books for details. The U. S. had some problems to overcome.
To answer your question, Socrates, it's like what aya said. "..it's a way of celebrating the accomplishments of the Black community." Many schools during the month will take the opportunity to focus on black history and accomplishments. Local news stations will do the same, featuring black community leaders. Many communities will also promote the month with some type of activity at local museums, libraries, or parks.
sounds like people who are so effected by this might wanna lighten the hell up. Maybe get a hobby, weaving say.. Or watch a movie, Airplane maybe, hey that'll get ya laughin! Well no, not some kids.

Airplane was funny
Jyl Patronising as usual. You should learn some manners grandma.
aya- Why bother devoting a month to celebrating the achievements of individuals who happened to be black? Why can't all Americans just be seen as 'Americans'? Why focus on race? Certainly there are plenty of Americans who happened to be black who have achieved many many wonderful things- but why make their skin colour the main highlight when it is their actions and deeds that were much more important. Also, why only focus on achievements? The histories of all peoples have good and bad, don't they? I don't get it. I see a black American, a white American and an Asian American standing together: and all I see is three 'Americans'; race is irrelevant.
skylab- "I must admit I don't know what it's like to be a minority member. Maybe they feel outnumbered?" - I am a minority, and in answer to your question- no, i do not feel that way at all, because I don't feel all that different from people of other races, so there is no feeling of being outnumbered for me.

Skylab The area I live in is over 50% non-white, which means I am effectively a minority there. Should white people in my area get a special calendar month to celebrate their achievements?
Aya, et al: three words "white history month". Sound racist? Of course. Then it should be racist for any group. We should strive to have fewer double standards in this country, not more. Don't you think it's a good idea to cut down on the hypocrisy?
it's a carma thing - washington feels bad about what happened to some blacks in mississippi 60 years ago or slavery 400 years ago - of course black people "love" being oppressed bcz then they can incite guilt
