Although Jews may have faced possibly more hardships and struggle than some other groups, I would say no. Any successful Jews in history should be remembered more so for their deed and their ideas, moreso than the side piece of information that they also happened to be Jewish. Rather than dividing people into different categories based on such things, it would be better to regard all as equal.
Scientists of all backgrounds should be celebrated.

A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America
When the first Jewish settlers came to this land, they sought a place of promise where they could practice their faith in freedom and live in liberty. During Jewish American Heritage Month, we celebrate the rich history of the Jewish people in America and honor the great contributions they have made to our country.
As a nation of immigrants, the United States is better and stronger because Jewish people from all over the world have chosen to become American citizens. Since arriving in 1654, Jewish Americans have achieved great success, strengthened our country, and helped shape our way of life. Through their deep commitment to faith, family, and community, Jewish Americans remind us of a basic belief that guided the founding of this Nation: that there is an Almighty who watches over the affairs of men and values every life. Jewish American Heritage Month is also an opportunity to remember and thank the many Jewish Americans who defend our ideals as members of the United States Armed Forces. The only reason why there is a black history month in America is because for a long time the accomplishments of blacks have been buried by many in academia,the accomplishments of jews have long been celebrated and so that's why they don't get a month celebrating their accomplishments.

MIAMI - In a history-making moment, President George W. Bush is expected next week to proclaim May of every year as Jewish American Heritage Month.
The proclamation will be the culmination of months of work by U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., who pushed resolutions through the House and Senate that urged Bush to take action. That’s no small feat for a first-term Democrat.
Now it’s up to school districts, museums and community groups to make the symbolic designation meaningful. Wasserman Schultz wants these institutions to raise awareness about Jewish contributions to American life, as they have done with Black History Month and Women’s History Month.
The month of May will replace the little-known Jewish American Heritage week in April that has been proclaimed annually by presidents - including Bush - since 1980. May was chosen because it does not include any major Jewish holidays.

So, I guess it's already a done deal. And I'm afraid I'm with Bush on this one (That's twice, today!). I just can't see the problem with making a special effort to celebrate and learn about people's heritage during a specific time period. The recognition of these "months" is voluntary, after all. I just don't see why it sets people's teeth on edge the way it does.

How about we have an accurate history month. Or even better, 12 of them in a row. In this nothing but accurate history will be taught. Unique leaders and innovators will be discussed in order of their impact on their world, rather than based on their skin color. No group will be singled out either to be ignored or unduly celebrated.
^I would agree with that plan herzog although I doubt it can be realized since many in academia have a bias for one ethnic group over another and will sign the praises of one group while ignoring the accomplishments of others.

no, that's absurd. there's not enough months on the calendar to accomodate every religion and culture who has endured hardships and deserves a month of cultural promotion. where's native american history month? i know, lets dedicate an entire month to the gypsy peoples.

- It doesn't seem to be about cultural heritage, which is a completely different issue altogether. What it seems to involve is picking an ethnic group, and celebrating all the great people who happened to be from that group- and thus focusing too much on ethnicity, rather than that of their actual achievements. I don't really care that Einstein was Jewish, his achievements are much more important than trying to bring his Jewishness into the equation, as if to represent all Jews, which is entirely ridiculous- his achievements were individualistic and not to score more points for all Jews.
As for cultural heritage, which is okay, there actual events for those things- such as Chinese New Year, Kwanzaa, Buddha's Birthday, and so on. Those are actually cultural, whereas these other examples of history months are seemingly purely racial and ethnical, which is different.
Socrates, but Black ppl have had to overcome a lot, perhaps had it even worse than the Jews. There's nothing wrong with Black history month, and besides, hardly anyone pays attention to it anymore. Mostly only Blacks.

It is something Bush has decided to do. You see cranky likes to distort things related to Jews. Of course he adds his slur of Joe Lieberman while he does so. There is a presidential proclamation for pretty much every minority group or cause there. If they don't get a month, they get a day or week.

You see his comment is irrelevant. As is the ballot. You might want to ask why every minority group under the sun and every health cause gets a month. None of what he implies is at all similar to a black history month where a special education effort is made in schools across the nation.

I don't think my comment was irrelevant. The ballot asked if there should be a Jewish History Month, and I pointed out that there already is one.
It seems to me that if someone is miffed over the degree of attention a history month receives, then that is a different question.

What seems inconsistent in all this excessive hostility toward Black History Month, is that many of the people who are calling for things like an "accurate history month," or societal color-blindness, or that "no group (should) be singled out either to be ignored or unduly celebrated," are the same people obsessively spewing hatred and pathological bigotry towards blacks, Muslims, women, etc.
How can it be convincing that such a low person really believes in true equality -- in this particular instance, only -- when the rest of the time, they energetically promote hatred toward various ethnic groups, religious groups, and women?

Socrates: there is some blatant inconsistencies on this ballot. Namely, those who claim they want a color blind society where people are judged on the content of their character and not the color of their skin, then go off on rants about how we as a nation must obsess over everyones skin color and make that their primary defining characteristic. For example: You aren't an american, you aren't from detroit, you're black, that is your culture/race/identity/etc. That is what defines you as a human being and you must be lumped in with all blacks because it is assumed you have the same perspectives, personality, viewpoints, etc.
I prefer to think of that person as an American, who happens to live in Detroit and produce more melanin than I do. Many of the comments above mine express the opposite view, the obsession over race that is starting to splinter the far left.
