SHOULD I HAVE THE RIGHT TO DENY THE HOLOCAUST EVER HAPPENED?

[+] serious ballot by winston
created Thu Feb 15, 07
Germany hopes to make Holocaust denial a crime across the EU as part of a package of laws it wants to introduce during its presidency of the EU.
Berlin is also set to outline plans to ban Nazi symbols like the swastika, which, like denying the massacre of the Jews, is already outlawed in Germany.

If these laws come into place, I could be sentanced to a jail term for hanging a swastika on my wall, a for denying that the holocaust took place. Should I have the right to deny the holocaust, or is it right to punish me for my radical views?

(Hypothetically speaking of coarse, I personally do not deny the holocaust or own any Nazi insignia)

I have a right to believe in my radical views 86%
I should be sentanced to a jail term for holding to my radical views 13%

Free speech is paramount.

While I understand Germany's desire to limit or abolish such things they have crossed the line on this. I hope it doesn't pass, but it probably will as europeans have yet to find a law that intrudes in to their private lives and vastly overextends the legitimate power of government that they didn't like.

People should have the right to say whatever they want, just as other people have the right to criticise them as they see fit.

If some asshole wants to deny the holocaust others should have the right to criticise the asshole.

winston, the same goes for muslim fanatics.

As an American, I think free speech would be better than censorship. I can see why Germans would see such speech as more of a threat, however.

Yes, no matter how deluded and unconnected from reality they are. While I understand the rationale being used as a justification for this law, I disagree. It causes more problems than it solves.

Its a backlash, sustained knee jerk reaction to certain events in their history, like the current climate of political correctness is a result of slavery in America amongst other things.

Laws like these are anti-progress and fear based.

Expect similar laws to be passed soon regarding "global climate change".

Researching whether the sun's radiation is increasing will be the same discussing the "six million" number".

"So you are of the opinion Herzog that Muslim fanatic's have the right to believe in their view's without being punished?"

The right to believe it? Yes, absolutely. The right to say it? Yes, but within reason. For instance, instigating others to specific forms of violence isn't acceptable, but in general just saying the west is evil is acceptable. Now, I expect the rest of society to denounce both parties, holocaust deniers and radical muslims, and anyone else who fits this sort of mold.

Free speech does not mean being free from criticism.

"Whats the deal with you and herzog, cranky?"

He stalks me. Look at just about every comment I've made that wasn't on one of the ballots he's been banned from, he follows me and makes asinine, off topic remarks. Is it sad that he dedicates so much of his life to this? Or is it funny?

However, yelling fire in a crowded theater should not be accepted nor tolerated by any country, government and/or its people...

I do however understand what Germany is attempting to do here...Although, to imprison people for their beliefs and expressing those beliefs is going way overboard...

btw, excellent ballot question...023

You have that right if you donot verbally or physically attack, belittle, or demean someone because of them. The illegality of it is due to the likelihood that you would spread violence inciting views. Germany also wants to eliminate all ties between them and the Nazis, an impossible feat. But you should be able to think whatever you want. This is very difficult for me to say because I am Jewish.
