Intresting one. Since we have not fully used them yet (thank God) I cannot truly say. The psycological effects of them tho have both helped us and not helped us.
I guess I would need to know what exactly we are being saved from? In the history of mankind though, nuclear proliferation is just another boring little chapter in my opinion. So yeah... I hate to be jive and say "neither," but I think I'll have to.

So far...

At some point in the future, I think it will contribute to our downfall...due to the nature of man...
^ I agree

Yeah you can't really say that nuclear weapons have SAVED mankind, can you, unless you're very stupid......
Well, they were created in order to make sure that the US had them before Nazi Germany, so at the time I suppose scientists thought that the US invention of the Nuclear weapon was indeed saving mankind...
Plus, if America and the U.S.S.R did not have nuclear weaspons, then a the cold war, fought like world war two, could have been a realistic possibility...

Nuclear Weapons are a deterent from attack. It guarentees non agression when agression is absolute suicide. The use of Nuclear Technology as a weapon is (though from our perspectives it wouldn't appear so) trivial. Nuclear Weapons have the POTENTIAL to devestate the planet, but the possibility of a simultaneous nuclear exchange on a massive global scale is miniscule. At most, 8 or 10 may be detonated in various locations on the planet, but the effects and contamination is no more hazardous to the global community than the 100s of nuclear tests conducted over the past few decades. Is your air contaminated? Your hair falling out? You water polluted? I don't think so. The potential future of nuclear technology far exceeds it's function as a weapon. We currently apply the technology to medicione and commercial power plants. The experiements in fast flux and our understanding of fusion and anti matter is creating new elements that may well hold the key to developing warp drive, anti matter conversion and displacement of matter from point to point without traversing the distance though space (dimensionally bending space, or creating a wormhole).
Assuming they would have been developed by someone at some point, they probably saved the western world from Nazi/Soviet domination. However, if they had never been created, there wouldnt be the need for a nuclear deterrent in the first place, would there?
It's not, per de, a deterent just from a nuclear stike, as much as it is a deterent from any type of aggressive act (aside from terrorism). Without nuclear weapons we would be at a sharply greater risk of aggression then we are with them. In fact I would go as far as to say, Nuclear Weapons contributed to the proliferation of democracy and has indefinately postponed a third world war.
^*per se*
Yes, but at what risk? Even soviet/Nazi domination of the West would be better than nuclear annihilation of the entire race surely? Even the worst of world wars wouldnt compare to a nuclear one.
I agree, but I don't think a full global nuclear exchange is likely. And even a limited one will result in tremendous loss of life and a blow the world won't soon forget. I pray that never happens.

To a never-ending cycle of escalation. Enjoy the carousel, future generations.
