it never ceases to amaze me at how hypocritical their government is. i'm embarrassed for them. they go to the united nations to complain about the fence, yet it's pointed out to them that they themselves have the harshest immigration policy toward their neighbors to the south -- in fact, mexico is notorious for having very heavy-handed arrest and detention practices for anyone crossing their border illegally. geesh! they really make asses out of themselves with this stuff.
"Legislators say workers and equipment building a section of the barrier have gone 10 metres (yards) into Mexico." Thanks for putting the yards in Kev, otherwise I would have had no idea what you were going on about. Whats a metre? ;)
i have no idea. the point is, the fence is not over the border, the workers were. gee, sort of like how their people just stream across the border and mexico encourages it. see the point.
p.s. winston, i didn't write the article einstein ;)

meanwhile, we're making trade for them easier -- WASHINGTON - The news that Mexican trucks will be allowed to haul freight deeper into the United States drew an angry reaction Friday from labor leaders, safety advocates and members of Congress. They said Mexico has substandard trucks and low-paid drivers that will threaten national security, cost thousands of jobs and endanger motorists on the northern side of the Mexican border. The Bush administration on Thursday announced its plan to have U.S. inspectors oversee Mexican trucking companies that carry cargo across the border. "This program will make trade with Mexico easier and keep our roads safe at the same time," Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said Friday. She announced details of the plan to let 100 Mexican trucking companies travel beyond the border area while she was in El Paso, Texas, at the Bridge of the Americas, which connects to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Said Teamsters President Jim Hoffa: "They are playing a game of Russian roulette on America's highways." Access to all U.S. highways was promised by 2000 under the 1993 North American Free Trade Agreement, as was access through Mexico for U.S. carriers. That aspect of NAFTA was stalled by lawsuits and disagreements between the two countries, though Canadian and U.S. trucks travel freely across the northern border. The Bush pilot project will let Mexican truck companies travel from Mexico throughout the United States and back. No hazardous material shipments will be permitted. According to the Transportation Department, U.S. inspectors will inspect every truck and interview drivers to make sure they can read and speak English. They'll examine trucks and check the licenses, insurance and driving records of the Mexican drivers. Inspectors will also verify that the trucking companies are insured by U.S.-licensed firms. The first Mexican trucks are expected to drive into the United States beyond the border area in about 60 days, the Transportation Department says.
"p.s. winston, i didn't write the article einstein ;)" Noooo Ive been discovered... Seriously though, I didn't know that mexican troops had crossed into the USA. If this is the case than they are being hypocritical.
^ but you don't think that millions of their citizens pouring across our border is a problem? their police have pursued drug dealers into our country as well. that's not the point. the point is, mexico has very harsh immigration policies, yet they expect us to just sit by and allow an endless flow of illegals. that's just crap man. how come they're borders aren't open? do you think they'd just let me stroll across and live off them? nope. what country do you live in winston? would you be okay if another country tried to dictate your nation's immigration policy, and then come to find out that said nation has some of the most hard-line policies for their own country?
i should also point out that i tend to like open borders -- but i have an issue with the double standard of the mexican government.
I live on an Island mate. To be honest I do not know enough about Mexico and its immigration policy to have a strong opinion on the matter, nor do I live in the US, so I am not directly affected by Mexican immigration. You do make a strong point however, and yes I would be annoyed to find out that a country that dictates Britain's immigration policy was hypocritical.

VERY hypocritical
Incursions by mexican citizens into the US are disapproved of by US Authorities and formal complaints are lodged regularly with Mexican Officials. It is not the Mexican Officials crossing into America that the US complains about, But Mexican Citizens. In this case it is American Officials (or their representatives, I.E. the contractors) crossing into Mexico under US Authority. This is a bit petty on Mexicos part, to say the least, but hardly hypercritical to lodge a formal complaint just as we do. It's Politics! You know American Troops are crossing into Iran to sabotage military targets and search for nuclear facilities, yet we bitch about illegal mexicans crossing our boarders. Doesn't that make us hypocrits? A meter is equal to 39".
^ huge difference. this has nothing to do with iran. stay focused man! focused! the point is -- and obviously i need to stress it once again! that the mexican government is constantly whining about us not letting their citizens just flow across the border. and, read the other article i posted -- we're opening up trade routes to help them! and what do they do? turn around and bitch about 10 meters that was a mistake. surely you see how absurd that is. you can't one day complain that we're trying to control illegal immigration, then turn around and go to the united nations about a fence on our ownw soil, then turn around and bitch that some contractors stepped on their side of the border. use your brain man! ;)
"About 11 million Mexicans are thought to live in the US, more than six million of them illegally." God help you.

In turn, we should demand that Mexico allows our trespassers free access to their healthcare and education systems.
Kev, I think it's certainly relevent in supporting a position of Mexico'a hypocracy, when we're doing the same thing. I can't this position without appearing to be a hypocrit myself.
^"...can't support this..."
And, yes I do see how absurd it is, I stated so: *This is a bit petty on Mexicos part,..*
Voted : yes, mexico is hypocritical
If the American public as a whole had any clue as to the way Mexico handles its *own* southern border...
Voted : yes, mexico is hypocritical
Certainly. And look at the way they scream "human rights violation!" if we dare detain and deport their immigrants, when they regularly beat, rape and murder illegal immigrants coming in to mexico without bating an eye.
