It depends on which country you are referring to. In countries like Germany, Austria, Czech, etc it makes sense given the historical context. In Britain, Ireland, Portugal, etc it would be disproportionate.

I agree it shouldn't be "illegal". People can make whatever outrageous claims they want. If someone wants to deny that the Holocaust happened, I can either ignore them, or disprove them by demonstrating the range, scope, depth, and quantity of information on World War II and the Holocaust.
If other myths, like making soap from human fat, have been officially dismissed as Allied war propaganda, why serious questions about the rest of the Holocaust mythology?
