WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD, WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE COMIC BOOK?

In the middle of all of this political bickering, let me bring you a bit of pleasant nostalgia. Specifically, if you read comic books between the ages of, say, 7 and 14, which one was your favorite (and why)?

I was an odd little kid, because my favorites were the 1950's EC horror comics of 3 decades earlier. These were the sarcastic, meanspirited comics, such as "Tales from the Crypt" and "The Vault of Horror," that were mostly full of gruesome, crudely moralizing short stories. My dad had collected them when they were originally released, then they'd begun reprinting them during the 1970's and 1980's. So, I had a mix of the battered old copies he'd managed to retain, combined with the newer reissues.

There were some great artists associated with these comics. To name a few, contributors included Frank Frazetta, Al Williamson, Jack Davis, Wally Wood, Graham Ingels, Reed Crandall, Basil Wolverton, Bill Elder, and loads more. The stories were a bit mechanical in plotting, but they had some nice plot twists and clever dialogue. They adapted a few old horror classics, such as "The Monkey's Paw" and some newer materials, as those by Ray Bradbury, but most were originals.

Best of all were the story hosts, the Crypt Keeper, Old Witch, and company, who had been inspired by 1940's horror and suspense radio show hosts. They'd come out at the story's start and conclusion and make a number of often quite funny puns and jokes, all at the expense of the latest victim. "Ah-ha-ha kiddies, looks like the guillotine master got a bit a-HEAD in his work! Too bad such a promising career was CUT OFF in its prime! But, don't worry, I'm sure Pierre will manage to SEVER himself from this bad situation and CARRION!" O.K., that's not actual quoted text, but that more or less captures the spirit of it! I'm sure if you ever saw the old HBO series, you can make this up on your own.

So, while I did enjoy some issues of Batman and the like, I was really happiest with an old EC in hand, preferably reading it undercover with a flashlight way past my bedtime. I recall these now, because an old friend of mine, gad bless 'er, has bought me a hardcover compilation of the first six issues of "Tales from the Crypt" that she apparently dropped fifty bucks on. It's a very lovely presentation for such lowbrow trash, and it takes me back.

Archie Comic Books 10
"Tales from the Crypt" 2
Batman 2
GI Joe 0
The Warren horror comic magazines (Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella) 0
Fantastic Four 0
Dr Strange 0
X-MEN 0

I love the old EC horror comics, but I never saw any of them until I was well into my 20s. When I was a kid though, we had the Warren Publishing horror comic magazines, Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella, and those were my favorites (along with the non-comic Famous Monsters of Filmland which was also published by Warren). I think Creepy and Eerie were mostly a sort of black and white rip off of the old EC comics (done in a magazine format to avoid the Comic Book Code that the EC comics had helped to inspire). I had a lot of fun reading them when I was a kid though.

*gasp, choke!*

"Good lord, Lemmingstraggler, I loaded you into the garbage compactor, then set fire to it, and encased the remains in concrete back! What are you doing back? Stay away! YAAHHH!"

Seriously, great response to my little ballot, folks, so keep the replies coming. I really am enjoying reading them so far.

Oh, and yes, I did catch some of the Warrens at the end of their original print run, Lemming, and they were a lot of fun. The local comic shop also had a great selection of back issues, and they were cheap back then...
