More partisan smears against Pelosi.

The Republican Jewish Coalition highlights the baseless Washington Post editorial in a new 30 second attack ad against Pelosi’s trip to Syria. It contains no mention of the five Republicans who traveled there as well last week. The tag line: “Tough? No. Dangerous and very wrong.”

Group Now Smearing Pelosi Was Led By Swift Boat Funder Sam Fox

The conservative group currently running an ad campaign attacking Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for her visit to Syria was headed until January by Sam Fox, the Swift Boat Vets funder whom President Bush has appointed as Ambassador to Belgium.

Fox infamously gave $50,000 to the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth, which smeared Sen. John Kerry’s (D-MA) military service and claimed his combat medals were undeserved. Fox also served as National Chairman of the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) for six years. He stepped down in January after being nominated for the ambassadorship by President Bush.

Contacted by ThinkProgress, a spokeswoman for the RJC would not rule out that Fox was involved in the ad, saying only that “as far as I know,” Fox was not connected.

Rep. Cantor Launches Partisan Smear Campaign Against Pelosi For Syria Visit

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), the chief deputy minority whip in the House, has launched a partisan smear campaign against Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for visiting Syria. He writes in the National Review:

The Speaker and many of her Democratic allies have become so drunk with grandiose visions of deposing Bush that they break bread with terrorists and enemies of the United States. The Speaker’s words and actions carry consequences for U.S. policy, and they certainly did our allies no favors last week. Instead of standing united with the president and Congress against the Syrian menace, Mrs. Pelosi chose to needlessly divide us.

Nowhere in his 700-word diatribe does Cantor mention the fact that five Republicans “broke bread” with Assad last week: Reps. Frank Wolf, Joseph Pitts, Robert Aderholt, David Hobson, and Darrell Issa.

Meanwhile, on his blog, Cantor is conducting a campaign to “Stop Pelosi.” He writes that Congress has “remained silent on Pelosi’s misrepresentation of Israel’s position. They have remained silent on her assistance to Syrian propaganda efforts.”

Unsurprisingly, Cantor is falsifying the record. Here are the facts:

Pelosi Was Asked To Communicate A Message And She Did. Before she left for Syria, Olmert’s spokeswoman Miri Eisin said “Pelosi is conveying that Israel is willing to talk if they (Syria) would openly take steps to stop supporting terrorism.” And that’s what Pelosi did: “We conveyed to him Prime Minister Olmert’s overture for peace talks when Syria openly takes steps to stop supporting terrorism.”

Pelosi Communicated A Consistent Message. Republican Congressman David Hobson said Pelosi “did not engage in any bashing of Bush in any meeting I was in and she did not in any meeting I was in bash the policies as it relates to Syria.” Republican Congressman Joseph Pitts noted, “Ms. Pelosi contacted us while we were in Israel, and we told her the message we gave. The message she gave Syria was similar to the message we gave.”

Lieberman Says Pelosi Syria Visit Was ‘Bad For America,’ Suggests Syria Was Behind 9/11

Today on CNN, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) said he “strongly disagrees” with Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) bipartisan delegation to Syria, calling it a “mistake” and “bad for the United States of America.”

Lieberman added, “I say this because we’re in a war. We’re in a war against the Islamic terrorists who attacked us on 9-11-01.” CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer responded, “But they had nothing to do with 9-11.” Lieberman dodged the issue and changed topics. (Think Progress)

Are you surprised that the pro-Israel lobby, including their beloved Jerusalem Joe Lieberman, is undertaking a full-blown smear campaign against Nancy Pelosi for favoring diplomacy over war in dealing with Syria?

It was never her mission, the message was never given in the first place. 1

No. But they better be careful. The American people are past fed up with Israel and their meddleing in our politics. Same for politicians. Put Israel over your own country and face being "outed" and face losing the next election. Disgusting.

But then again, how many people will call the likes of Joseph Lieberman and Eric Cantor to complain about their lies?

Israel despises Syria. It is a state that sponsors terrorism against it. So of course it is not a surprise that Israel would 'overreact' as if its national security were at stake.

^Soc:

All of the people and organizations mentioned in the ballot text are American, not Israeli.
by cranky on Wed Apr 11, 07 12:34pm [+]

Socrates, how does that affect us? Once again...so let Israel handle it. At what point will the United States realize that our blind support of Israel has done us immense damage? Do you even realize how weakened we are because of it? There is much, much more to Iraq than you may realize. There's a back story (I heard that phrase on TV and was looking for a place to use it! :)

That back story is the world is fed up with the likes of GWB carrying out these illegal wars and making more talk of yet more conflicts with yet more supposed enemies. People are tired of it. They can make us pay in more ways than one.

Does this strike anyone else as odd? Ever notice that guys like Lieberman and Cantor and many in the rightwing Conservative camp are always slamming others as being "Un-American," yet they themselves put the interests of a foreign nation (Israel) ahead of the interests of the USA? Seems kind of like mass hypocricy.

I'm sorry Margaret, but what virulence? Cranky is posting direct quotes from the sources. How is that Virulence on his part? He posted a perfectly legitimate news event. Please point out his supposed Virulence?

"More details on Pelosi smear group.

Jane Hamsher has more details on the Republican Jewish Coalition, which is bankrolling a series of attack ads on Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) over her trip to Syria: “The board is quite the rogues gallery and includes Ari Fleischer, David Frum, Sheldon Adelson, Lewis M. Eisenberg and Ken Mehlman. They also financed ads for Lieberman during his senate race, and has some lovely overlap with the Scooter Libby Defense Fund.”" (Think Progress)
