COMMENTS:
Anyone gay people at my school would have admitted it at the expense of their social life and friends, except for a a few butch fag hags, who would invite any social pariah into their midst simply to top up their numbers. Unless they were a lesbian of course, in which case they would probably get elected to head girl by all the sloberring boys drowning in a sea of hormones and fantasies of chance encounters with open minded bi-sexual women in positions of authority.
jesus tap dancing christ! please excuse my chubby digits and non-functioning brain.

I don't think it's even an issue anymore. Times have changed. I have and have had friends who were openly gay in school and it's not an issue. Maybe in a backwards place or some rural town, but with the advent of cable TV and the internet, etc., it's such a commonly accepted part of life that I don't think anyone gay person has the challenges they once did. In NYC, we have at least one school I know of that is comprised of almost all gay students.
"we have at least one school I know of that is comprised of almost all gay students." By coincidence, or design?

It's kind of an issue in our school, same sex couples attend proms and it's not against any rules, but ignorant people are still out there causing same problems you probably had in your day.
Elmira is rural and backwards for sure patch :)
My coincidence or design? I think design. If I recall, many of the gay students in Public NYC school gravitated toward the "creative," which was not a focus at regular Public schools, so I think it was developed as a test. I don't recall (geesh, I sound like Alberto Gonzales). Anyway, I should clarify that maybe in Public schools there are still issues, but I still don't think nearly as much as there used to be. I still also think that in major metropolitan areas, it's not as much an issue as in more rural areas. (sorry Larry!)
I meant *By* and not my.

Not at my old high school. I'm not totally sure why. I never met anyone that was openly hostile towards gays, but nobody really "came out" until after high school. I've since learned of 3 people from high school that "came out" after graduation.
Voted : No, High Schools are still just as vicious as ever.
Heah in Lil' Ole Jawja, I jes' read 'bout some good ole boys whut beat up a kid fer bein' gay. (I love this state. NOT. )

Out where I live, the gay lifestyle is tolerated more now than a few years ago. They are still targets of gratuitous insults, but more and more people seem to accept them and leave them alone.

yes, all of our highschool Proms are VERY Festive..or 'Gay' as you put it, quite colorful and the Snakbar is delightful - of course, all of the Students are at the Lake getting Hammered and having a wild old Romp but the Prom is very Gay.

Not so much a problem for lesbians from what I have seen. Did not see any openly homosexual male couples during highschool though. Possibility that they may have felt more of a chance of ridicule? Don't know.

Embrace it? They promote it.

I'm glad you highlighted homosexuality as a "lifestyle". Maybe this is hidden in plain sight, but the conflict between people about homosexuality seems to stem mostly from the view that homosexuality is a choice and not a biological predisposition. Occasionally religious fundamentalism will contribute to extreme intolerance in this area. I do not think that wo/men become sexually attracted to other wo/men because it's a "lifestyle"(?) choice. Heterosexual men don't get hypnotized by gay witches into thinking: "I'm gonna stop being sexually aroused by women and start being sexually aroused by men." I'm pretty confident in asserting that homosexuality is overwhelmingly biological, but also influenced to a minor extent through socialization and experience. This is a generalization. (Public) schools can't ban people from dancing because they're gay. I'm sure the degree of tolerance is mostly a function of the social environment.
