EUROPEAN GREEN ANXIOUS AT THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF MULTICULTURALISM?

[+] serious ballot by xxxxxxxx
ACTIVE Apr 24,2007 - Wed Apr 23, 08
"For years those who raised their voices were mostly on the far right. Now those normally seen as moderates — ordinary people as well as politicians — are asking whether once unquestioned values of tolerance and multiculturalism should have limits...

“A lot of people, progressive ones — we are not talking about nationalists or the extreme right — are saying, ‘Now we have this religion, it plays a role and it challenges our assumptions about what we learned in the 60’s and 70’s,’ ” said Joost Lagendik, a Dutch member of the European Parliament for the Green Left Party, who is active on Muslim issues.

“So there is this fear,” he said, “that we are being transported back in a time machine where we have to explain to our immigrants that there is equality between men and women, and gays should be treated properly. Now there is the idea we have to do it again.”

Now Europeans are discussing the limits of tolerance, the right with increasing stridency and the left with trepidation..."

(Excerpt from New York Times)

- So now even the far-left Greens are starting to admit the flaws of multiculturalism? Many other Greens backed his concerns for such issues. As Lagendik put it, the whole idea of an official policy of multiculturalism, although good-intentioned, was a bit naive. He and others expressed the view that immigrants should assimilate into European values of women's rights and homosexual rights even if it is contrary to their traditional ways.

So do you think this European Green is being a xenophobic bigot?

No, not at all. These are just and fair concerns for a Green to have. 7
Yes, being concerned about such things makes one a xenophobic bigot 2

The promotion of human rights is not bigotry. So of course immigrants should integrate into European values.

All I know is I'm waiting for that nut who's been making every ballot about the USA to come along and make this one about the United States too. Some people shouldn't be allowed out of the institution at all. Its good they're having this discussion. Sticking your head in the sand helps no one

I think it's about time that the Europeans and we stopped taking the leftist Occidentalists at their hateful word: Western culture not perfect and there are episodes that are shameful, but, to be blunt, we've a lot of which we can be proud and cultural values we can laud. Some self criticism's healthy, but self loathing's utterly uncalled for!

Tolerant assimilation should be the goal of Western culture, not multicultural absorption of disparate cultures that may not be compatible with our own.

"tolerance and multiculturalism should have limits"

Agreed on this point. Of course immigrants to Europe should integrate to such an extent that they don't rape women and stone gays, but to deny them the right to remember that they are, in fact, different is ridiculous.

"Tolerant assimilation should be the goal of Western culture"

Basically what I feel.
