The monopoly on the world's dependence on fossile fuel energy is leading to an even bigger crisis for consumers in the long haul. Auctioning one pork chop to feed 20 hungry lions will have catastrophic social and economic consequences for many.
Cutbacks in demand, development of alternative energy resources and lowering production costs is the only way to keep the pump price down. Allocate alternative energy resources to various civil, production, industry and military markets.
Vegetable oils burn just like deisel fuel in your car, corn and wood grain alcohol is easily adapted for home heating, cooking and fueling small two cycle engines (you could distill it yourself), wind farms, solar power, Solid Oxide Fuel Cells and underground thermal heat cells in rural communities and government offices, thermopiles and static generators (wind up) run small home electronic devices, etc. It's not a solution, but could substantially reduce the global demand for crude oil.

The esculating costs are inevitable since a country's economic security depends on production and production requires energy.
The bottom line is get used to it and plan ahead because it won't be getting better until an abundant, efficient alternative can be developed and implimented.
