SHOULD DEMOCRATS IN CONGRESS SUBPOENA NSA DOCUMENTS?

[+] serious ballot by Mithrandir

The Bush administration is seeking new legislation to expand its wiretapping powers under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. However Democrats would like to have access to secret legal opinions and other documents from the Justice Department related to the National Security Agency’s domestic wiretapping program, which apparently is no longer operational, in order to have a proper perspective on whether or not to vote for the new legislation. The Justice Department again apparently does not want to turn over the documents in question because they would be “confidential”.

Since January, the Bush administration announced the wiretapping program has been under FISA meaning it was no longer conduct domestic wiretapping operations without seeking court approval. Which is why this new legislation is very interesting…

Should the democrats subpoena the documents?

Yes. Wiretapping might be needed for some extreme situations, but Bush shouldn't ask us to trust him too much.

There have been too many secrets already, and the result of keepin them has only been to deepen and thicken the morass we're in in Iraq. Maybe having the documents in more hands would allow fror more thought processes to be applied to the model, and a wider range of solutions to be fielded.

There is a false belief that the public should know absolutely everything that goes on in government.

While I do not agree with how far the Patriot Act has gone in taking freedom away from the populace, I do not believe weakening our government as a whole, the ENTIRE government, not just this administration, is the correct course of action to take to rectify the situation.
