OBESITY WHY DO WE CARE?

[+] serious ballot by larrynelmira
ACTIVE Jun 14,2007 - Fri Jun 13, 08
This is something I see on this site and on the streets, I do it too, for example: when at a restaurant, if I see someone over weight hanging at the desert bar, I think to myself, you sure don’t’ need that piece of cake, but it’s their bodies, who are we to tell them what they should eat or not eat?

For those of you who have issues with people over weight, is it because you care about those people and their health, is it the contrast between those people and people suffering malnutrition, the strain on our health system, or is it simply the sight of obese people turns you off?

Seeing those people and seeing people without food makes me angry 20%
I have no problem with obese people , let them eat cake 17%
Concern for their health 11%
Seeing those people simply turns me off 11%
I feel sorry that they look that way 11%
strain they cause on our health system 10%
because it's gross 10%
Comment 4%

COMMENTS:
I have a cousin who is considered obese and I worry about her health, but she gets very defensive when anyone expresses this concern.

Those two faaaaat fuuuucks would make great trampolines - that one on the right would make a good water bed

To each his own poison.

I think a little of all the above.

let's face it, it's not exactly a "medical condition". if it was, there would be fat people running around Ethiopia.

Portion and self control plays a great part in this, as I can testify by my own experiences.

Voted : Concern for their health
It's their choice, but they do have a higher risk of heart disease.

I have lots of overweight family members, on my dad's side. And you've described most of them in your first sentence.

honestly.
People are dying of starvation all over the world.
Everything about Super Consumerism makes me sicker every day (especially what we with tv's and plumbing take for granted) but this kind is just a symptom of a horrible mental disease.

But I do think some people are somehow genetically prone to being in their^ shape, an old friend of mine, one of the most beautiful women I know, is super-large and can't control it. She's a case for the stomach-stappling and whatnot, she'd be a supermodel if she lost 100 pounds.

I think we are obsessed with fat people because we have been so successfully market by the healthfood industry. Madison Avenue is great at making us want things, do things, eat things, etc. They have sold us on the stereotype body: lean and mean. There is no intrinsic reason we should exalt skinny people and insult fat ones.

Silly.

For the same reason we care about any sick people.

For whatever reason (glandular, mental) stuffing yoursel into an early grave is something that is clearly not within the realms of normal, sensible behaviour.

^Wideheadofknowledge: Do you actually believe that the contempt and gratuitous insults directed at fat people are connected to people worried about their health? Give me a break! Picking on fat people is a form of social bullying. Period. Fat people are soft targets and people who attack them are usually cowards and cheap shot artists.
by margaret123 on Fri Jun 15, 07 2:38pm [+]

eating properly is one of the most difficult things to do, ever!

i don't think whok is at all saying to bully or pick on overweight people. the way i read his comment is that like with any illness or disorder, mental or physical, that obese people need help. i would have to agree with him. morbidly obese people either have a mental or a physical reason to bring themselves to such a state. how is it wrong to want to address that or help them?
by Kev24 on Sun Jun 17, 07 12:48pm [+]

aya, it really isn't. it's a decision you make. it's really simple do to -- you cut out/down on all meats, you eat whole grains, vegtables, fruits and organic yogurts, etc., etc. avoid the over-processed foods and if it's white, eat it sparingly. white = processed white bread, sugar, pasta, etc. you can eat whole grain pastas and never really have to worry. drink lots of water and you'll be fine. good example is diet soda. i have lots of friends who go on diets and over-dose on diet coke. disgusting. if it's got high-fructose corn syrup in it, it's not good. anyway, not at all trying to preach here, it's just that eathing healthy is really not as hard as people think.
by Kev24 on Sun Jun 17, 07 12:51pm [+]

Voted : because it's gross
I mean...to me there is a difference between chubby, fat and obese...to be obese means you never lifted a thing a day in your life, you're completely and UDDERly revolting.

I mean, just LOOK! Need i say more?

I mean you have to do an awful lot of nothing to get like that...

It might be herditary but it's not a disease, and it can be worked off, it may be harder for some but there are support groups and work out places and stuff, it's not something they can't fix, and sitting like that watching there family look at them with worry and disgust is really quite mean if you ask me. Do it for your kids, your partner, yourself. It just shows total lack of care about yourself or life WHATsoever.
