I've only had a cat and a fish, and the fish was more stressful to me, because of all the water-changing and tank-cleaning. Patricia (my cat) never once missed the litter box, and the shredding issues were minimal. :-)

They eat from one box and shit in another. If it's an indoor cat, your only problem would be the occasional hairball which is usually deposited in front of a doorway while you're asleep. Just be careful when you wake up to go take that morning whiz.
beez, they leave hairballs all over the place, and your house would smell like cat. Plus, they fart and they sometimes shit on the floor
