WHY ARE THESE SCAMS STILL LEGAL?

I hear this dirtbag's ads on the radio all day long. Using a number of different websites, but always the same pitch: "Order my free book".

I looked this guy up on a consumer fraud website and found the following information:

The book wasn't quite free, you had to pay $3.95 in shipping costs, which you put on a credit card. You might think that this is a small point, after all, you're only paying a small fee for the shipping... except, now he has your credit card numbers and authorization.

About a week later, a package arrives.

It contains:
A paperback book, 192 pages, "I got here, you can, too! A Master's Course in Becoming a Millionaire"
An audio CD
A pamphlet selling their merchant processing service
A paper binder of 8 more audio CD's; the "Aggressive Wealth Audio CD's" collection
A welcome letter.

Here's the fine print:
"We are giving you these two products for free as a thank you for considering the entire Aggressive WealthSM program. Take up to 30 days and decide if you want the balance of the Aggressive WealthSM program, if you elect not to take advantage of this exceptional offer and you decide you do not want the balance of the Aggressive WealthSM program, simply call our toll free number (within 30 days from our shipping date) to process your cancellation and we will cheerfully give you a return authorization number and cancel your order and you will owe nothing. At the end of the consideration period if you decide you want the rest of the program, do nothing and your credit card will conveniently be billed only one payment of just $99.90."

That's right, when you agreed to pay $3.95 for the "free" book and one audio cd, you also agreed to by a set of 8 audio cd's for $99.00.

It's bad enough I have to hear these awful advertisements all day long, but they mention nothing of trying to stiff you for $102.95.

I don't think I even have to tell anybody what happens when they try to call to return these items.

Can anyone explain why criminally deceptive advertisements are allowed on the air?

^^ Oh, he's not getting a penny out of me. Others appear to have not been so fortunate.

I hate when you have to call and cancel, mostly they try to talk you out of it and many times it's not canceled, in some cases it takes few months before they finally stop billing you, and of course they can debit your credit card in three seconds, but to reverse charges, that can take a life time.
I found this out with the Video Professor

those scams suck, highway robbery is what they are.
by larrynelmira on Fri Aug 03, 07 10:48am [+]

that should be illegal.

there is another king of that scam, how to use the computer CD's that they advertise on TV.

Exact same scam, you can find complaints all over the net on that one.

Beware.

The Video Professor? Say it isn't so.

(I remarked to my wife when I first saw his commercial, "That guy's got to be a shifty motherƒu¢ker".)

Have you ever seen an old, bald guy try and operate a computer?

My cousin just tried to suck me into a pyramid scheme last week. I can't believe how such people prey on those who want a better life for themselves.

That's why you always read everything.

I bought that item BTW and my dad and I let the charge go through because the other stuff is helpful.

Also as for the Video Professor I did that deal too and I had no problem when I called up and canceled and I never had another charge from them.

Of course for some reason all my free offer items I do I get also even though everyone says they get screwed. Don't ask me why things work for me.

Actually it's good to learn this way so that you really know what you're doing to people.
