RETAILER OFFERING PRESCRIPTION MEDS FOR FREE

[+] serious ballot by Kev24
created Tue Aug 07, 07
CAPE CORAL - Publix supermarket chain said today it will make seven common prescription antibiotics available for free, joining other major retailers in trying to lure customers to their stores with cheap medications.

The oral antibiotics, representing the most commonly filled at the chain's pharmacies, will be available at no cost to anyone with a prescription as often as they need them, Publix CEO Charlie Jenkins Jr. said. Fourteen-day supplies of the seven drugs will be available at all 684 of the chain's pharmacies in five Southern states.

The prescription antibiotics available under the program are amoxicillin, cephalexin, penicillin VK, erythromycin, ampicillin, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, and ciprofoxacin.

I think it's good thing but I don't know how the pharmaceutical industry will respond to it.

I don't know if more antibiotics out there creating superbugs are a good idea.

It sounds great and all. And a couple of those listed are pretty expensive.

But I'm thinking what LCD is. When they're really needed, it's great that they're free. But overuse of antibiotics can lead to some pretty big problems. Many doctors now are even trying to avoid antibiotics when they can because of the immunity that some viruses/bacteria is developing towards them. Not to mention the patients becoming less reactive and immune to their effects also.

It's not like they are passing them out at the door, still need a prescription and hopefully the doctor won't give if he or she doesn’t think they are necessary, in some cases people who do need won't have because they can't afford.

That's the problem with the antiobiotics now, larry. There are doctors who practically pass them out the door, calling in prescriptions without ever consulting with the patient in person. And likewise there are patients who look at them like miracle drugs and nag their doctor for them everytime they get a sniffle.

Guest, there'a already been someone to step up to the plate and offer free meds. No one hardly hears about it because it's the pharma companies doing it. The large majority of them have programs for lower income citizens (seniors especiallly) to obtain free medicine. Sure it's mainly done for marketing and promotion, but that's also the same reason why Publix is doing it... "joining other major retailers in trying to lure customers to their stores with cheap medications."
