IS GIVING TO CHARITY FOR A TAX BREAK TRULY CHARITY?

[+] serious ballot by contragrain

Lots of folks give to charity for the tax break it offers. Giving to charity is the right thing to do. But, how many would continue to do so without the tax break? And if you wouldn't give, except for the tax break, can it truly be called charity?
The word "charity" comes from the same word which we get the word "cherish" or to "love." Isn't love a bit tainted if we're only in it for what we can "get out of it?"

No, it's still charity, see comment. 5

I think it is still charity because they could be doing something uncharitable with the money that gets them financial gain. Also, the tax break tells me the donation is sizable. They may be getting a tax break, but they are still giving away the money.

When I gave to charities, I never even considered writing it off on my taxes. You don't seek recompense for a gift given from the heart.

The donor may not be giving with the sole intent of charity in mind, but it's still charity in that it is going to someone who needs it.
