The United States has among the highest incarceration rates in the world. More people are behind bars in the United States than any other country. As of 2006, a record 7 million people were behind bars, on probation or on parole. Of the total, 2.2 million were incarcerated. The People's Republic of China ranks second with 1.5 million, even though China has many times more inhabitants than the US. The United States has 5% of the world's population and 25% of the world's incarcerated population.

And then, there's the secret, outsourced prisons...
Tough sentencing laws, record numbers of drug offenders and high crime rates have contributed to the United States having the largest prison population and the highest rate of incarceration in the world.

Easy. "Freest nation in the world" my ass!
Got it.

The U.S. US.
U.S. incarceration rates by race, June 30, 2006: Whites: 409 per 100,000
Latinos: 1,038 per 100,000
Blacks: 2,468 per 100,000
Gender is an important "filter" on the who goes to prison or jail, June 30, 2006:
Females: 134 per 100,000
Males: 1,384 per 100,000
Look at just the males by race, and the incarceration rates become even more frightening, June 30, 2006:
White males: 736 per 100,000
Latino males: 1,862 per 100,000
Black males: 4,789 per 100,000
(these statisticsfrom prisonsucksdotcom)
For comparison:
South Africa under apartheid (1993), Black males: 851 per 100,000
U.S. under George Bush (2006), Black males: 4,789 per 100,000

Taxpayers are paying more for them than they are to help babies who happen to be born poor and get ignored until they're old enough to sell drugs and go to jail where they have a place to stay and dinner served every day by the taxpayers.. lol it gives me a headache, sorry :p

I just saw this on TV.
It works out to be less than 1% of the population. It's like be like 3/4 %. People should stop doing crime. Statistically, this is a tricky one. You can't go my sheer numbers, you have to look at it in the percentile approach because a country with a population of 50 million that has 500,000 people in prison works out to be 1%. So if you look at it in terms of numbers of 2.2 million in the USA out of a population of 300 million, it's still far below 1%. But, if you took a European country for example, like Italy or France that has a population of 50 - 60 million, but has 500,000 people in prisons, then stastically, they have more people in prison per 100,00 than the USA does. Just a note.
P.S on the China stat, face facts...they execute more people, so it's of course a lower number in prisons. How can you accurately track their prison population when in reality, more people "disappear" in China, without trace, than in any other country on the planet? If they were to imprison instead of execute, they'd probably have 10x than the supposed 1.5 million.

The reason your note is flawed is because in France for example, their prison population is nowhere near (per 100,000) The numbers this Country has...neither is Italy...
I'm not going to bore everyone with stats but I can recommend

It will be still high in Obama's term too.

Well, let's see, it's not Germany or Chile, because spanking is illegal in both countries, so there are fewer kids grow up to be murderers. Could be Russia or China because of all the smuggling that goes on there, but I'm leaning toward USA.

the usa has 7 times more than china % wise.
China actually has more people in jail, and many countries do not provide an accurate listing, along with countries who do not jail criminals at all.
Voted : India
