Voted : Salvation Army
I always give to the Salvation Army. I don't know the percentage of money that goes into helping people vs. helping their own pocket books, but after seeing the Red Cross in action (or in-action rather) during huricane evacuations here, and seeing teachers and the Salvation Army buy handicapped students from poor families new shoes after the local United Way gave some bureaucratic excuses as to why they wouldn't, it's the Salvation that gets my money every year. The local chapters here have gone above and beyond the call of duty when ever there was a need in the community. That's the only major organization that I give to. The rest of them are local like church groups and the local animal shelters. Though I did quit giving to one particular church after it was determined that the donations were doing to selfish wants (new basketball court for the church yard and new 20,000 'meeting room' to name a couple) rather than to their own community members who are sick or in need.
Voted : National Public Radio
Station members usually get some really odd requests played on the air.
Voted : Bat Conservation International
I went to Carlsbad Caverns and saw the bats take off on their nightly foraging. It was so impressive that I started reading about bats. Next thing I know I'm donating.
