This issue aways reminds me of the Cheech and Chong comedy (the big bamboo album) routine, about the old man being tortured and interrogated...
Interrogator: "Sign zee papers old man". Man (sobbing): "I cannot sign zee papers". (Sounds of a beating). Int: "Sign zee papers old man". Man (sobbing): "I cannot sign zee papers". (More sounds of a beating). Int: "I'm losing my patience with you, old man!"... Man: "What do the papers say" ?Int: "That we have not mistreated you"! (More beating and sobbing). Man: But I cannot sign zee papers. More beating/sobbing Int: "Why cannot you sign zee papers old man"? Man: "Because you have broken all my fingers".

All of the studies I've read on the matter say that torture is ineffective, that it often secures false statements from people who'll say anything to end the pain. Plain stuppid.
