Well certainly in cases when a user that is blocked somehow still can post to the ballot or a user like that who guest posts to your ballot even though they are blocked (coz they are so obsessed with you). Or in cases where your ballot gets spammed with garbage. An example would be ballot #101743 HOW SAFE DO YOU FEEL FLYING USING COMMERCIAL AIRLINES? The ballot was spammed with 9/11 garbage by lovelynice and ken_from_dublin. I ended up closing the ballot after warnings and negative karma failed to stop it. If I had been able to wipe this crap, the ballot would still be open.
I should add that the user should be mature and responsible about it. I know, this is difficult to achieve at times on this site.

No. Only moderators or maintainers should. There's many who will use that option honestly when being abused or harassed. But there's also people who will wipe comments from someone just because that someone proves them wrong in a discussion. I've seen that happen on sites that allowed such. And I've seen the equivalent here with negative Karma given just because they didn't get their facts straight and someone proved them wrong. People can get nasty when their opinions are questioned. But they get even nastier when something they believed as fact in regards to a touchy subject gets proven wrong.
No-one should be able to, unless it's an actual nasty, abusive comment or spam. You've got jokey teasing comments vanishing left right and centre. Not to mention well thought out comments, which took half an hour to research, disappear just because some anal ass decided they didn't like the direction theirs or someone else's ballot was going. Baby sitting the whiners to the point of allowing them to filter out what they don't find acceptable could be the final nail because after that there would be just no point anymore.
^ And that's the type of comment which sometimes vanishes. The person responsible comes along and recognises that they're the anal ass being discussed, and instead of seeing the big picture, in a cloud of red mist they wave their censor wand. :o)
I'm not saying the anal ass is anyone in particular, I don't know who can do what around here these days, but whoever it is needs to lighten up. If the cap fits an' all that.
There's a saying that goes, "letting the lunatics run the asylum". That's what it would be if any Joe Blow can delete comments on their ballots.

If one doesn't have the stones to accept the idea that someone might say something on your ballot that you don't like, don't post it.

Never. But, Maintainers do wipe abusive, threatening or nasty comments. Don't they ?

That can be a double edged sword, some comments need to be wiped, and there should be a method to have them "reviewed and" wiped if the "wiper concurs, but a blank check to wipe might just result in censorship based on other criteria than should be warranted...(disagreeable comments rather than unappropriate comments...)
"But, Maintainers do wipe abusive, threatening or nasty comments. Don't they ?" by Black_Lava Sometimes. I think some other times it depends on who made the comment and who the maintainer is. I've seen maintainers themselves making comments worthy of deletion. That's why I think maintainers should be chosen on the basis of merit alone and not on the basis of karma. That's how cliques and 'good ole boy' networks form.
^ It wasn't decided by Karma, it was decided by donations in the early days.
soothsayer, what do you mean? "might just result in censorship based on other criteria than should be warranted...(disagreeable comments rather than unappropriate comments...)" It's already happening.
No. In fact, maintainers should have no power to wipe ballots or comments either. Too often people allow their own personal views to sway what they allow and don't allow. Some of the comments that a certain 'someone' has allowed are really ridiculous.
Anyhow, nothings workin' round here, and you want to start on somethin' new. Shame on you :o)
