our republican candidate for US president. while some may say it's understandable since he was tortured as POW, I still see him wagging his tail in front of GW Bush as his lapdog, so all his lip service doesn't mean a damn thing. unless he says something like "I hate all republicans for condoning torture", I wouldn't give this racist a time of day in this election.

A guess, just because he was a POW.
I'm not sure I understand LCD's comment. Gook is a term that refers to the enemy soldiers or sympathizers. Its use has not been limited to Vietnam or even Asia. He has also stated several times that this statement is in reference to the North Vietnamese prison guards who tortured him and not to the Vietnamese. In fact, McCain led the efforts to normalize relations with Vietnam. Yes, the government whose guards tortured him. I don't think that calling him a "racist" is accurate either. He and his wife have an adopted Bangladeshi daughter. It may be inappropriate to some that he resists changing his language on this but at least he is upfront about this which is in contrast to most all the other sanitized focus group modeled candidates out there. Lets be a little fair here and consider the context. I could quote some of the more shady characters endorsing other candidates or imply other things about them that are unfair. What matters is what the candidate does.
the term "gook" is a derogatory term for anyone of asian descent, NOT for enemy soldiers or sympathizers, at least these days. if he cannot adapt to the language of 20th century, maybe he should look toward the rest home, not the white house. normalizing relations with Vietnam or having an accoutrement daughter of asian descent doesn't change the fact that he has a certain view of group of people, tainted by his experiences. I have been robbed and shot at by robbers who happened to be black. Can I go around saying "I HATE THE Nixxers. I WILL HATE THEM AS LONG AS I LIVE" , and get away with it and not be called a racist?

he does play the lip service against torture. that shows that he can adapt to the 20th century concepts. but what have he done other than lip service? he is still running for the party that supports the torture, and is being endorsed by the Dubya as the next ideal president. I don't see him turning down that endorsement.

"He has also stated several times that this statement is in reference to the North Vietnamese prison guards who tortured him and not to the Vietnamese" yeah. he should have said: "I HATE THE North Vietnamese prison guards. I WILL HATE THEM AS LONG AS I LIVE" or even "I HATE THE Vietcongs. I WILL HATE THEM AS LONG AS I LIVE" but that's not what he said now did he? People can say things that sounds racist and not mean it. I looked into that. I saw his stance on torture and I appreciated it, until I realized that a person in his position (US senator) can do lot more than just paying lip service.

^ I remember him making this disgusting comment and he is running for the highest office on this planet...His racist comment has gone unchecked by the media, it should be brought out on center stage of the election and made to explain his comment for all the world to hear...Had Obama or a Clinton made such a comment, it would have turned into a tv series by now... John McInsane, what a pathetic little man...
This is what he said after the widely quoted statement: "I was referring to my prison guards," McCain said, "and I will continue to refer to them in language that might offend some people because of the beating and torture of my friends." Its easy to take one line of something someone said out of context and use it to bash the person with. He did not use this in reference to ALL Vietnamese and has clearly stated so. Therefore, your comparison to him in regards to being robbed is not valid nor accurate. If you had such a thing done to you, were tortured and held prisoner for years while your friends experienced the same, I could understand your use of a pejorative term in reference to those who did those things. I would not agree with it but I could understand. I wouldn't label you a racist unless this attitude carried through towards all blacks. If someone went around and said you used this in reference to all blacks, I would respond to it in the same way as I have done on this ballot. Provided the full statement of what you said and any clarifications as to what you meant. RE: the torture issue. I agree. However, I don't delude myself into thinking that somehow the democrats are that much better. They basically signed off on the window dressing treatment bill on torture. They didn't raise a big protest or make it a signature issue either. You might also want to look up the origin of the term "gook/guk". Its based on a Chinese word.
"I was referring to my prison guards," McCain said, "and I will continue to refer to them in language that might offend some people because of the beating and torture of my friends." just my point. "I HATE Nxxxxxs. I WILL HATE THEM AS LONG AS I LIVE" when called on it, "I was referring to robbers," LCD said, "and I will CONTINUE to refer to them in language that might offend some people because the harm they caused my family, finances and my sanity." come on, defend me fflsd. my heart was in the right place, I was justified in my hate, wasn't I? were you even reading what he said? he will continue to call a whole race of people in derogatory terms, because small number of them (SOIDIERS ON THE OTHER SIDE) commit war crimes. where is his outrage at the war crime committed by GW Bush and his underlings? Where is his outrage at this war, which he is willing to carry out for the next 100 years? Does he carry the same hate for the soldiers who committed the same crimes in Abu Graib, and why did he not make sure they rotted in jail for life? hmmmm? :)

That dummy John McCain. And even if he does feel that way, why would he, a man running for President, be so tactless as to say it in public? Didn't he joke about bombing Iran once too? Sorry, but if he wants to be President, how does he expect to be successful when dealing with Asian nations? Imagine how they would feel sitting across the table from him? He's tarnished himself with his big mouth in my opinion.
