Did you know there was an index to measure misery?

Misery is defined as a state of great unhappiness and emotional distress. The economic indicator most often used to measure misery is the Misery Index. The index, created by economist Arthur Okun, adds the unemployment rate to the inflation rate. Also figured in are the high taxes, pollution, traffic jams, and Crime.

According to Forbes Magazine, the first ten entries here are the most miserable cities in the U.S.

Vote for the city that you think is the most miserable or add more cities and towns to the list.

Out of the cities on that list that I've been to (Detroit, New York, Philly, Chicago, and LA), Detroit wins by Ye Olde Long Shote. Not just the city, most suburbs too. Many people around here are indeed very miserable.

Wow, NYC is on the list? Odd. People in general seem pretty happy here. It's a relatively clean city, very active, lots to do, very, very crowded with tourists, so that's important. I really don't mean this to be defensive, but Forbes is notorious for being kind of...well, out of it. :) Even their list of the 400 is often way off. But, like I said, I am honestly not being defensive, but NYC one of the most miserable? Not to the 12 or more million people who live here. :)

Now that I've read the article, I have a better perspective. As I thought, more sensationalism from Forbes, who often seem to run out of "story" ideas. :)

They say about NYC:

"The Big Apple has the longest commute times (36.2 minutes) and the highest tax rates (10.5%) in the country."

Again, I'm really not trying to be a jerk, but they factor in commuters time. Well how could people who don't actually LIVE in the city in question, really factor into the "misery rate?" Anyway, odds are that they spoke to people who have to make their way INTO the city and who among us likes to have to spend time to get where we're going? It's skewed. :)

^Here is what was said about New York City, who came in at #4.
High income taxes, stupidly expensive housing, "the costs can make all but the super-wealthy miserable."
by RunsWithScissors on Sun Apr 20, 08 1:54pm [+]

I guess, but people are still moving here in mass numbers. Plus, how much do you want to bet he is ONLY thinking of Manhattan? NYC is 5 boroughs: Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island and the Bronx. Trust me...super wealthy people are not living in or moving to the outer boroughs. :) Many people make the mistake of thinking of NYC as ONLY being Manhattan, when in fact, most people actually live in the outer boroughs, but are still residents of NYC.

Many people are very surprised at how cool New York is when visiting for the first time.
