They keep it alive by being loose cannons and thinking of themselves as busy heroes with great missions, known only to themselves (like little Don Quixote's) when they are only being officious, annoying and disruptive. Unfortunately, stupid figureheads taint the way the entire group they represent is perceived.
I do not think they keep racism alive knowingly for gain, however.

America perpetuate racism, not Jackson and Sharpton, they only expose it for what it is...Many people don't appreciate them exposing the raw sore of racism, thereby pointing the finger at "them..."
Make no mistakes, all the credit of perpetuating racism goes to America, she has done a fabulous job in that regard...
