I think that you are oversimplifying and the pollsters are too. Given the choice, most of the voters in West Virginia and elsewhere would be willing to vote for someone like Colin Powell. While black, most people who stated "race was an issue" would support him and would do so in large part because they perceive him as sharing their values. What has made them nervous and apprehensive is the whole Reverend Wright situation. It scared people to hear the preacher at Obama's church saying such outrageous things. It made a good number of people question what Obama really believes. It more importantly made people wonder whether Obama shares the same cultural values as they do. Fair? I don't know. It wasn't fair for Kerry to have his war record challenged and his character impugned by a candidate who deserted the military, but it is politics and this happens. People make decisions on which candidate to support and vote for in large part on emotion and whether they think the person is "like them". This is why for example that Reagan won in a landslide of epic proportions over Mondale even though voters opinions on the issue were much closer to Mondale's than Reagan. Not understanding this is in large part (IMO) why the democrats have had such problems gaining the presidency since 1964 despite generally having better qualified candidates and being closer on the issues to what people think than the republicans are. It is why some people think that others vote against their economic interests. They vote for someone they perceive shares their values. The democrats have had a big problem in convincing voters that their candidate shares the values they have. Republicans understand this very well and have been very good at exploiting it.

You might also ask why gender matters. People might not admit it but when I talk to people who support Obama, their reasons are often tinged with sexism. Of course, most don't realize it or would never admit it to themselves.

I want to add a couple of points. I am not surprised that most of the leftists on the site are quite willing to label West Virginians or any other state (or group of people) as being racist or stupid if they don't vote the way the leftists think they should. There are literally hundreds of polls and comments that imply this. This is in part why democrats often lose elections they should win (2000, 2004 presidential, etc). West Virginians or residents of other states aren't racist or stupid because they vote a certain way. In fact, people in those states traditionally used to vote for democrats and they are good people. Additionally, African-Americans have been elected to statewide office in many states in the south (or others that voted for Bush). They win because the majority of people trust them and believe that they care about them. They and their supporters aren't condescending towards to white and working class voters. Leftists here and in blog-land often unfortunately are.

I'll address the Hillary issue. Hillary understands what I stated in my first comment. Although she arguably has had a elitist upbringing than Obama, voters believe she cares about them. That is why many of you don't get why the gas tax holiday had appeal. Its also why many of you don't get why the average voter doesn't give a rat's ass about "reform" or "lobbyists".

I also think that Obama's decision to campaign very little in West Virginia (and also not to make a speech on election night) will come to haunt him if he is the nominee. To me and many others, it appears like he doesn't and didn't care about the people in West Virginia. Sad as every democrat since Woodrow Wilson has carried West Virginia in the general election. Something I doubt very seriously that Obama has even a chance of doing without Hillary on the ticket. I'm sure though he is enjoying now the celebrity of John Edwards endorsement, but I don't think most people care.

I'll wait now for BBC's blather about Hillary the b*tch, yes we can and other nonsense. LOL

Voted : because racism is still ripe in West Virginia
Racist people usually never admit to it, they always have another reason for their actions seeing how they are usually in a state of denial but unlike other areas, the west Virginians were (some of them) willing to acknowledge they vote race rather than issues case closed. More enlightened people have more criteria to consider when they vote. Race may be one of them, but it shouldn't be the "driving factor" and that goes for gender and age (in most cases)...Notice the number of non-white individuals who migrate to that area and it may give you a clue...

"West Virginians are a bunch of hillbilly, inbread idiots"

This comment is funny but not for the reasons the person who made it anticipated. In an attempt to mock West Virginians as being hillbilly (ie not too smart) and INBRED, the person who made the choice MISSPELLED the word INBRED. Ha ha ha! I'm amazed (NOT) that someone who appears to be attempting to show how smart he is, cannot spell the word INBRED correctly. Instead, he infers that West Virginians are somehow made of BREAD. LOL

Voted : because racism is still ripe in America
West Virginia is overwhelming White and racist, period and I defy anyone to state the contrary...

However, dispite their refusal to vote for Obama because of his race, rather than the man himself and he being the more trusthworthy, sincere and having true vision of change and getting this country back onto its feet, he is still in the lead and he most definitely will win the nomation...

As for FiddleFaker's verbose commentaries (which not one valid point was made)You could have said less, all you had to say simply was (Yes, I am FiddleFaker and I am full of sh*t and BBC approves this message).

hilLIARy appeals to racist, that is why she is receiving many of the White vote and she plays that fact to the hilt...Her comments about Obama and the hard working White voter sealed it for me, Black voters, White voters, Superdelegates, women, the poor, the rich, the disabled, men, the young, the old, the educated, the uneducated, hispanics, asians, muslims, christians, jews, gentiles, etc, etc, etc...These supporters make up a diverse group, unlike hilLIARy's Klan rallies...

BTW: Did I mentioned that hilLIARy is having a difficult time getting the BLACK vote?

She won the African-American vote in West Virginia.

West Virginians are good people and by and large are NOT racist. It is only ignorant people who delight in stereotyping others that believe so. Ahem....
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Wed May 14, 08 7:47pm [+]

hmmm msnbc One in four Clinton voters and about one in 10 Obama voters said race was an important factor in their vote.

That is hardly "overwhelming"

"A very large percentage of them said they voted for Hillary because Bill told them to.." That doesn't mean they voted for Hillary instead of Obama because of Obama's race. LOL

Your inference isn't based on facts.

Cake, your comment is too stupid for me to bother replying to.

^ You are too stupid period, you support hilLIARy, enough said...
by Barbara_Baby_Cakes on Wed May 14, 08 8:38pm [+]

^typical ignorant comment. I don't support Obama in the primary race but I certainly do NOT conider everyone who supports him to be stupid. But then again I don't look at things in terms of either one way or the other. Unlike CERTAIN people who are genetically incapable of seeing things in terms of gray.

So now when we make a comment we have to quote where we got it from ? News flash, I don't make things up. check out exit polls for the W Va. votings:
(this is from the associated press)
THE BILL CLINTON FACTOR

Three quarters of Hillary Rodham Clinton voters said Bill Clinton's campaigning was important to their vote

It is not my intent to "educate" or "prove" anything when I make a comment but if you wish to read what I was reading go to google and type in "West Virginia exit polls"

It doesn't have to be racism, it could be preference.

On the larger scale, race doesn't play as large of a role as people thought it would. If race played a role in America, it would be Hillary and Edwards going against each other right now.
by R_T_L_ on Wed May 14, 08 9:57pm [+]

Even though I voted for Obama, some of the comments here make me cringe. I'm sure that Clinton and Obama are both competent.

For the same reason that other states find that gender matters. It's always something. There is always an "ism" whether it's based on gender or color. We should complain agaisnt both kinds, not just one kind.

by forgetmenot on Wed May 14, 08 11:24pm [+]

FFSD you don't believe that 1 in every 4 people that think that race is a factor is overwhelming?
