They have forgotten more than you will ever know in many cases, you don't get old by being stupid...a lot of young people have been taken to the cleaners and don't even know it yet...

What LCD and Soothsayer said. I've learned more about practicality and common sense from my elderly relatives and the elderly in my community than the whole time when I was in school. Some things can't be taught, just learned from those with the experience. And being up to date and current on all the new technology doesn't all the time equate with being smart. From what I've seen from a lot of people, the opposite is actually true many times. Too much technology can make us dependent and stupid. We think we're smarter than people a hundred or two-hundred years ago, but the large majority of us wouldn't last a month if we were transported back in time. Reminds me of the time a few years ago when some bad storms passed through our area and we lost power for almost two weeks. Everyone was whining and crying about no lights, no water, no stores open, etc... The elderly lady that I used to clean house for would invite me over to eat with her during that time. She wasn't affected one bit. We ate like kings because the woman has enough home grown canned food stocked up to last her six months. Meanwhile, my computer whiz of a brother-in-law who thinks his big salary can get him whatever he wants was on the verge of tears after a week of eating beenie weenies and MREs from the Salvation Army. Compared to my bro-in-law, I think my elderly neighbor has a hell of a lot more sense and 'know how'. That's the same woman that taught me how to make soap with nothing more than rain water, wood ashes, and lard.
