no matter how twisted it may be, they truly believe in their religion, and they live according to it. I hear that it's no picnic for the men either, except for the "prophet". They are usually away for months in the city (salt lake city) at a time, working to support their family.

The one's I've known of don't get legal marriage licenses. They're married 'in the eyes of God', which is enough for them. And technically, not enough for the state to prosecute. However, if they take advantage of the common law marriage laws in Texas, they don't have to have a license to be legally married. All the woman has to do, I believe, is live with the man for so many months and proclaim the marriage by either signing her last name as his or making a statement saying that they are married. So in effect, even if someone was married illegally (invalid license, polygamy, fake priest, etc...), their marriage is considered valid. Though it may not be legal, as in the case of polygamy. It's been a while since I've researched marriage laws, so I could be wrong. But the above was the case the last time I did any research.
^ I forgot about the common law marriages, I know in New York and Pennsylvania it's no longer recognized, I don't know about other states
