I pondered this when I heard somewhere that a survey found that 60% of Americans hate Paris Hilton. I'm no fan, and I think that she's done a lot of stupid things, but I really can't hate someone that I don't know.

I say, I hate cranberries.
I say, I hate Hitler (and what he stands for).

Now putting both of those in context.

I don't hate people I don't know per se, but there is this guy who lives down the street from me who has the worst left foot I have ever seen, it's a really really bad left foot, one of those very arrogant and "know-it-all" feet that you come across every once in a while. Stupid jerk left foot! I hate that guy
