Marketing genius at work... Upscale NYC Market Charges 'Energy Surcharge'.

Signs like this one are posted all over 'Eli's Manhattan' supermarket on the Upper East Side.

The cost of everything seems to be going up lately, making tough times even tougher. Now a supermarket on the Upper East Side is passing an energy surcharge onto customers. And as CBS 2 HD quickly found out, many shoppers are outraged.

At 'Eli's Manhattan' customers are warned with big signs at the checkout counter. A 1.8 percent surcharge -- for rising energy and fuel costs -- will be added to their grocery bill.

Shoppers at the upscale supermarket are used to paying more for groceries, but they aren't happy about the added charge.

>>>>>>>>>>Why not just raise prices?

Just raise the damn prices already and enough with the surcharge crap. 6
The price of groceries already reflect the rising cost of doing business. 2
This is just 'Insult to Injury'. 1

COMMENTS:
But the owner said he wanted to cause controversy with the 1.8 percent surcharge. Instead of burying the cost in the price of groceries, he's pointing it out to get customers thinking and talking.

I'll bet they're thinking of a lot of 'Four Letter' words to say right about now.

No surcharges will be applied to baked beans, broccoli or cabbage. That gas discharge shall be waved and not passed on.

More Taxes or Surcharges is not needed. We pay too much like it is.

If they are rich enough to shop there, they are rich enough to pay some higher prices. But this silly surcharge seeme to indicate the store thinks they are easily hoodwinked. Charge the higher prices, they will pay, but don't insult the cusotmer's intelligence.

My local newspaper has started adding a fuel surcharge to my bill. They say it's to help the newspaper carriers with the cost of gas.
