It was trying to make a quick end to a war that already had taken too many lives. What you fail to realize is that WW2 would have lasted much longer and would have resulted in many more lives lost if not for the A bomb. The U.S. had basically destroyed everything in Japan. There was little else to bomb but these two cities in Japan. Japan had been bombed enough that there was little but rubble throughout the remaining parts of their empire. So how do you stop these people who are very proud and will not give up from continuing to fight? You use your most destructive weapon to scare them into a surrender. And in fact it is history and it worked.

Americans didn't responded with fear and cowering on September 11th, only resolve and determination. I never fully understood how resilient we were until I saw our hearts united by a common cause that day.
