COMMENTS:
yes, the UN in important in international affairs
Boy, I'll tell you what. Americans can keep deluding themselves. They can keep saying, "Fuck them! Who cares if they abandoned us? Who needs them anyways? They're obsolete!" and yadda, yadda, blaze-squaze. But guess what. US AGAINST THE WORLD ISN'T GONNA FUCKING WORK! I'm telling you, we're just asking for it. These countries are gonna gang up on us and say, "To hell with the American Empire! To hell with their reign of terror!" And we're gonna go down, like the Roman Empire before us. case closed.
History never fails to repeat itself, my blinded friends. Just you wait and see.
Wise words Jannine. The UN means the rest of the world and for people like Blair and Bush to disregard that is asking for trouble surely?. I think they got away with Iraq because jittery politicians in countries like France, Germany and Russia, (who in private backed the invasion but knew their voting public who without full access to the FACTS would not have tollerated their country's involvement) chose to back off. The available FACTS being - 1. Iraq was in possession of WMD 2. Iraqi regime was really horrid. The WMD argument appears to be down the pan now however the Iraqi regime is definately dead and buried. International opinion still needs to be sought before venturing on this type of crusade and the UN are truly the ones to discuss it with. After all haven't the UN responded to the atrocities in Zimbabwe by sending in peace keepers to resolve the atrocities, re-instate the farmers and prevent the impending famine. Err NO, In fact what have the UN done since Korea in the 50's? Pissed about in Bosnia; but it took NATO troops to resolve Kosovo (no mandates but that was OK at the time) The UN is a pussycat without teeth.
Everyone *thinks* they're intelligent, even those who really aren't.
The US doesn't stop all the evil in the world - no-one ever has. However, it does an awful lot of good.
The UN is a joke. Human rights are being trampled on all over the world--do they care? No. People are killing each other in Africa. People are hopping in rowboats to escape Cuba. Women are being forced to abort if they get pregnant more than once in China. The UN doesn't give a damn.
Hey, those forced abortions are really sad, but I can't help but notice how effective they've been at curtailing the population. Evil? Maybe/maybe not. Does the end justify the means? Maybe/maybe not. See poll #15579: Are Good and Evil Objective Notions?
The UN may not be effective, but its stil the most effective, and everytihng it douse is sanctioned by the majority of the world. The fact that such an inefectule organisation is the best the world could muster is a shame to us all
"Hey, those forced abortions are really sad, but I can't help but notice how effective they've been at curtailing the population." - I'm sorry Janine but that is downright evil! You and that Gaggoonies dude should pair up and start up the 4th Reich. No wonder the U.N. doesn't protect people with stuff like that comming out of people's mouths. How would you like to have been forcably aborted? I'm thinking you're the last person I want having kids, maybe you should be sterilized? How about another Holocaust or two? Please try to have some decency people.
Still unwilling to fight for freedom. Since it isn't difficult to understand the importantce of democracy, I'm not particularly concerned with G.W.'s intelligence level in the terms you are speaking of. He is a decent (not great) leader which is the best Washington will allow right now.
For once you're correct. If the UN had any teeth it would do the right thing and and liberate the West Bank and Gaza, strip "israel" of it's WMDs and enforce the 50+ resolutions passed by the General Assy. against "israel"'s policies of genocide and crimes against humanity.
The idea of collevtive security that the U.N. is based on is no more. The U.N. is weak wristed and has no power without the U.S. funds it only works if were on board does any one disagree, i'm not saying we were right for just fucking off the U.N. but without the U.S. in the U.N. it's nothing if you need an example they were powerless to stop the U.S. in any regards of the invasion of Iraq.
flagrantviolator: Israel isn't allowed full voting privilages in the UN and there are 60+ Arab nations who treat the Palestinians like shit yet pass resolutions against Israel to play legal games. It is a complete show. A One World Government has indeed been predicted for the End Times. It is interesting people do not recognise or care that the UN is so neglectful of its mandate that it has been condemned by the watchdog organisation Human Rights Watch. A tool so easily puppeted definitely is cut out to be the instrument of death for millions someday.
The UN is only as competent, capable, and coordinated as the sum of it's members. Considering how poor a job some countries do at electing competent, capable, and coordinated leaders for themselves, don't expect too much from the UN. Besides, it's all politics and commerce so poorer countries get the shaft.
