George W Bush loves the death penalty. He puts people with a mental age of 10 to death when human rights groups are outraged. The death penalty is the road to hell. If killing is wrong then why not demonstrate that fact?
"Killing is wrong so i'm gonna kill you." So contradictory it could be gagoonies.

Wolverine68 if you were one of inocents it would matter or. A punishment which is without the possibility of redemption in any way is barbarous, inhuman and finally very weak.

"Innocent people on death row is unacceptable. Until I can be sure that everyone sentenced to death in Illinois is truly guilty, no one will meet that fate. I can't support a system proven to be so fraught with error and come so close to the ultimate nightmare of taking an innocent person's life. People are starting to understand that there's a possibility that innocent people are going to be put to death. I don't think anybody wants that on their hands or their consciences. It's just a matter of right and wrong." -Gov. George Ryan

Drug dealers? You don't think that's a bit harsh? Watch out Budweiser and Marlboro. They cause more deaths than the illegal ones combined.

The Death Penalty was abolished here in the UK in the 1960's. Even now we have cases where innocent men and women were put to death, usually because they were either mentally ill, or mentally handicapped. Then there was the case of the Guildford Four. These men and women were accused of the IRA bombing of a pub in Guildford that killed soldiers and civilians in 1974. The judge who sentenced them at the time wondered why they had not been charged with treason which still carried the death penalty "A sentence I would have gladly passed in this case" said the judge.

The death penalty has no deterent value and just makes our society more barbaric. Do we want a society that is forward looking and enlightened or do we want to stay in the middle ages, perhaps burning witches at the stake or stoning heretics?

Only if George Bush takes a sit :)

There has been a lot of discussion that USA is abusing(I'd say raping) democracy and this would be another perfect example of this. Although democracy is all about the power of the majority, there are certain permanent values and morals in the world that even the USA(definitely not usa) should be allowed to ignore. Human rights are the most fundamental and constitutive of them. Now, if these rights aren't ensured to all people as equals, if the majority has the power to decide on other peoples LIVES, then we have a terminological problem. Thinking about democracy, equality comes first and only then the distribution of power.
by Chava on Thu Jan 08, 04 8:15am [+]

So you would therefore say that the minority should have that power correct? Since criminals/murders should be allowed to decide Life & Death of their victims. But no- God forbid we would take retribution for the sake of said victims. I ask you- what about the Victims?

Yes, and USA is the only Western country that still has it. The only other countries that have it are generally countries that have poor human rights records, like China, or Third World countries. If
even one innocent person is executed, then it's not worth it. Making the person rot in jail for the rest of his or her life is better, because of the slight chance that there could be a mistake, and he or she is actually innocent. I shudder to think of how many innocent people have been executed.

It's necessary to keep Black people from ruining the country.

Why not execute the tobacco industry while we're at it, since secondhand smoke kills, and despite their lies, smoking can be and is addictive. I wouldn't mind
seeing drunk drivers who have killed others as a result of their stupidity get the needle, the noose,
the gas chamber, the firing squad, or the electric chair myself. That's just plain stupid. If you are drunk and driving, you should die.
by Stingray on Tue Jan 27, 04 6:16pm [+]

..but...they...still...rot in jail for the rest of their lives right?...I'd ask you to kill me.
1. Murder is premeditated. So, drunk driving dosnt constitute murder, it's manslaughter. Not that I dont agree that it's stupid.
2. In nations with poor civil rights, the death penalty isn't and institution supported by the people, and done using a judicial process that is in favor of defendats. I dont see how you can make a point of saying that the United States is the only western country that has it- when...you're wrong.
Treason is punishable by the death penalty in almost every country. What if they were innocent?
by pipingkid on Sun Feb 01, 04 9:07am [+]

I strongly agree with the executions being halted. The death penalty should be abolished COMPLETELY. It should be done away with COMPLETELY. DOWN WITH THE DEATH PENALTY!!

Let us all take a momentÂ….. beginning the healing process by forgiving that man that kidnapped that 11 year old girl from the sarasota car wash. The torture.. rape and murdered (I believe) is society's fault for not helping this man in his time of high anxiety which would have eliminated his aberrant behavior. I will be burning incense and chanting a "love shield" to protect him from the evil Florida prosecutors who whish to harm him.
