Actually, Whittle APPLIED for a patent, Dr. Ohain was GRANTED a patent first. If you want the technical answer, then Ohain is first.
Sorry FEnatic, but I done my homework on this one and Sir Frank Whittle was the first and I did check the technicalities.
I did my research also, does applying for a patent qualify him as getting one? Some sources say that both are credited together as the first. Ohain was the first to fly though. Good question, starts me thinking!
Sir Frank Whittle did get his patent in 1930, but didn't get his engine into the air until 1941, he constructed his first engine in 1935 and did his first bench test in 1937. Dr Hans von Ohain got his patent in 1936, done his bench test in 1936 and his engine flew in 1939 and he wnet on from there to develop a second improved engine which flew in 1941 which shows that Dr Ohain did more developmental work on the jet engine than Sir Frank Whittle at the time, this was probably due to the Nazi push for technological advancements so as to gain an upper hand over their enemies in Hitlers war plans in this period of time
Sorry, correction, my typing mistake, Dr Ohain bench tested his engine in 1937, coincidentally, the same year as Sir Frank Whittle
