Good question nuckinfutz. Out of the first three choices there i would definately say Beefheart. I cant realy think of anyone more alt than that right now..
Didn't alternative spring up in the late 80s, as something to classify rock that wasn't hair metal? The word kind of lost it's cache after it became the dominant form of rock in the early 90s. I'm not sure about this, but I think I read it somewhere. I think the Pixies, Jane's Addiction and REM would represent the first popular, alternative bands using that criteria.
Good point, Anonymous. A lot of what's called 'alternative' started getting accepted by the mainstream and stopped being 'alternative' years and years ago.
