my dad died when i was 14 and i have never recovered from it. i still get severe times when the depression is overwhelming.

I don't think anyone truly gets over a loss.

i don't believe you can get over it. for me it will stay etched in my memory forever especially someone that i loved.

It depends upon what you mean by "get over."

For a "permanent" loss, such as death/divorce, I'd give the following estimates ...

The initial grief that consumes your life: 1 - 3 years.

The deep grief that takes up much of your life: Another 1 - 3 years.

The periodic remembrance and pangs: Probably for the rest of your life, but they come less frequently, over time. If it was a death, paradoxically, some of these remembrances will be fond/warm.

The deeper the love, the deeper the pain of loss.
